I am surprised this has not made the news section yet but the latest Sony press releases at Sony-Europe.com suggests that the new models are

    STR DB2000 a QS model

STR DA 3000ES & STR DA 5000ES which would seem to be replacements for VA333ES and VA555ES.

    All feature S-Master Amplifiers.

Topping it all is the TA DA 9000ES which has already been mentioned in the forums.

unfortunately I have not been able to download pics yet.

I like it :smoke: But don't like black, no doubt there is a silver version.

Will they still give off a 'clinical', 'bright' sound however...

I have just read the news on the Sony site.

I suspect the DB2000 model will replace the extremely popular DB1080 model or then again it may be a pricier amp as it provides 120 watts per channel.

Looking at the 1080's extremely broad feature set, the only way in which it could be improved upon for its price bracket is with better amplifiers, hence the new S-Master amplifiers.

Expected launch date being August 2003, I wonder whether it'll affect 1080 sales...

I can't think of any thing they could improve apon my nice looking, nice sounding STRVA555ES that would benifit me, but i'm sure they'll find something to make it appealing...

If you look further on the Sony-Europe site you can view the Specifications of the three new AV Amps/Recievers

    http://www.sony-europe.com/presscenter/GetFile.x?gfxid=462

I was thinking of going to buy a Sony 1080 this week but I think i will wait till August and go for the STR-DB2000 which looks to be the replacment for the 1080.

I noticed that Avland have a picture of the DB2000, The Sony-Europe press info has a link to pictures but the link appears to be broken.

I don't mind it either and I prefer black myself; all my Hi-Fi is black apart from my Linn Sondek.

Is that a row of air vents on the top? If so there is a lot of them.

Hurrah! At last Sony have brought out an amp to match my QS NV900 dvd and X9 vcr. The DB 1080 and its predecessors always seemed at odds style wise for a QS product. The DB2000 is much better, lets just hope the new s master amplification does the job. One minor point, but I notice the pic of the DB2000 doesn't sport a QS logo. Is this a pre-production pic?
    Anyway, roll on august!

Looking at the STR-DB 2000 (I could be wrong) it looks as though Sony have done away with the annoying blue light that comes on when decoding 5.1/6.1 soundtracks. good thing too, I hate the damn thing on my 940 & I've put a piece of black electrical tape over it as it distracts my viewing.

Hate to dissapoint you Grimly, but the blue display still appears to be in evidence at the top of the main display. Out with the black tape again...

It would be interesting to know how DB1080 owners, like myself, feel out there, about the new DB2000.

Style wise, the new range is a complete change (see avland link) after quite a few years. If you look at say, the 925, 930,940,1070,1080 including higher and lower models in the range, they're all quite similar.

I suspect that this new minimalist look with the move away from the existing 'hi tech' look, may win over some more customers.

I look forward to how the DB2000 will turn out in terms of performance, especially considering how satisfying the existing 1080 is.

Don't forgot maybe we are wrong in thinking that the DB2000 will replace the 1080, Though the DB1080 and DB2000 due have similar specs but the DB2000 has a few options, Maybe there is a 1090 due out ?!?.

The price of the DB2000, based on avland's price of £450, ties up with the price of the 1080, along with similar specs, so I can't imagine a 1090 being released unless it is going to be significantly cheaper.

I have just replaced my 930 with a 1080 from Richer Sounds and am mighty pleased with it. I also quite like the blue light which was reduced in size and made vertical from the 930's horizontal strip. The 1080 itself was a nightmare to get hold of and I had to travel 140 miles to Colchester branch of Richer Sounds to collect it but they did give me £125 for my 3 year old 930. I try to buy all my AV gear from them. I plan to keep it for at least the same period of time unless the STRDB2000 is significantly better which I doubt.

What is S-Master Digital amplification exactly? What makes it special?

I'm looking to replace my DB1080 bought in March as it's afflicted with the "speaker buzzing" disease. Parts for the modification are not expected until August (at the earliest) and the DB2000 is not expected until at least September. My supplier only has the Sony and Yamaha Receivers (and doesn't have an RXV740). Therefore I'm going to request a refund and upgrade to either a Pioneer or a Denon - see other thread. PAUL

I think this is quite promising as reading the spec, the 5000 model is doing up-conversion to component. Lets hope that means the OSD can be outputted via the component outs as well. Finally some competition to the Denon 3803.

I do not care about looks as my equipment is behind closed doors and not viewable, that is why the OSD via component is so important to me.

    Cheers,

    JP

I'm a little upset that they have abandoned the project for replacing the top end processor (9000es) and gone for the integrated only route.

Still... up conversion to component will save on the multitude of outboard convertors I use already!

Just hope that they sound as good as the other top end ES stuff

Just for information, Superfi in Manchester have told me that Sony are intending to maintain the 1080 as well as the 2000 because of the demand and success of the 1080. Should continue to be sold "for at least 6 months".

I spoke to a salesman at Sony, who checked on their internal systems for me. The 2000 is definately replacing the 1080 (which now shows as 'Unavailable') . Trade price is identical to the 2000 - so web prices should stay the same - do not pay a premium for the new model!!

    Availability from end of August.
