    Hi,

Unfortunately it seems that only the new GXD500 has a Freeview tuner, not the more expensive HDD models. Looking at the specs, it looks like only the HX900 and HX1000 have PAL progressive scan. Hope this helps.

They all have PAL PS apart from the 500 (which has the DVB tuner).

NONE of them have variable record quality.

    Danf 42,
Many companies change the specs from the Japanese models.
I would not expect UK/EU models to be the same from past experience.

Panasonic DVD recorders always have smaller HD's when they reach the UK, and it took several years for the component out to be sold to the UK after the JP models.
I believe that only Philips may have a DVB tuner this year.

    Steve.

The first DVB equipped DVDR is going to be the Sony GXD500 mentioned above. We are likely to see the Humax model released fairly soon now as well.

Notwithstanding the 2hr PQ limit on burnt discs, the hard drive models feature one generation copy protection!!!
So burning replacement discs, burning to multiple formats (for family/friends players) and backing up the hard drive all barred with this wonderul  feature on these Sony models. :rotfl:

    hi stanleyntl,

Could you elaborate a bit more on exactly what u mean about the bold items!

"Notwithstanding the 2hr PQ limit on burnt discs, the hard drive models feature one generation copy protection!!!
So burning replacement discs, burning to multiple formats (for family/friends players) and backing up the hard drive all barred with this wonderul feature on these Sony models. "

    To SparkyBun (Mel):
The max picture quality on Sony recorders (when writing discs) is 2 hrs, equivalent to SP mode on other machines, after which the line resolution drops from 500 to 250 lines and digital artefacting - motion smear, block noise occurs.
Other makes can write up to 3.5 hrs before dropping to 1/2 res(250 lns).

Copy protection prevents multiple writes of source material from hard disc and I suspect re-copying from recorded DVD+/-R/Ws to hard disc (which would enable duplicates to be written). www.avland.co.uk lists all models "features".

Anyone know where I can download the manual for these new recorders. Can't find it on Sony's web site. Thought they would be there by now especially if they are already on sale?

    thanks,

    Mark

Stanlyntl, that was why I dropped my GX7. Too many films come in at 125 minutes and that drop is unacceptable.

Acording to the manual, the copy protection is dependent on the signal coming in. Which looks like it is refering to pay per view channels where it won't allow you to record them. There is nothing about only being able to record everything once.

Thankfully the multi quality modes have been included from the japanese model. So it means 1 hour dvd on HQ and 1.5 hours on HSP and 2 hours on SP. It doesn't say how many lines it records in each mode though :(
