    Hi all,

Just been informed of the new Skystar.

The new SkyStar 1 CI will have an integrated Common Interface, and on-board software decoding (based on newly developed hardware). Features will include real-time PVR, Multi-channel Preview, EPG, the ability to watch and record different channels at the same time (on the same transponder), plus DiSEqC 1.2 and USALS. A remote control will also be included.

    Pricing to follow.

That looks a great spec for HCPC users, but what about an HD STB with a CI slot... Here's hoping...

The RRP is €179 don't know if that is before or after VAT. It works with Euro1080 but you will need an Irdeto 2 CAM along with the Euro 1080 card. Museuemsteve does your STB have a separate CAM.

Can you post any links to this for retailers who will stocking this card please? I had heard about it before, but did not know the price.

How is the decoding for HDTV handled? is it on board, or do you need a powerful CPU? I have an Athlon2500xp(333fsb)?

    Thanks

There doesn't seem to be a link yet, probably because the card is not available until end of Aug or beginning of Sept. I presume Digitalsafari will be supplying them. I have some details, the decoding is by software and the software is completely new, not DVBviewer as in SkyStar2. I think the DVBviewer software will be updated to work with the new card later in the year.

    Hi all,

It's still looking like the end of the month for this and we will have them as soon as they are released.

I am looking at pricing the card with an Irdeto II CAM and Euro1080/HD1 card when I have final pricing on the Skystar.

    Couple of questions...

I'm intending to use this card in a fairly low spec machine (600mhz or so), it's my understanding the Skystar 1 uses hardware decoding which results in a card that needs very little computer power to run. However with this new addition, I notice it says software decoding, surely this is going to require a substantially better machine to run on?

I appreciate the card isn't out yet, but I expect it's my lack of knowledge on the subject rather than specific details of this card.

Yes, you will need a much faster machine, similar to SkyStar 2 requirements.

Interesting -- “on-board software decoding” sounds like an intermediate solution between real hardware decoding, and software decoding done on the PC.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’d rather stick to software decoding on the PC; this way we can mix and match codecs to get the best results. So I hope that this “on-board software decoding” function can be bypassed. Basically I just want a SkyStar 2 w/ CI. ;)

By the way, are the Euro1080 resellers now willing to sell smart-card only subscriptions, without requiring the purchase of an STB?

    Cheers.

Cheers for the speedy responce. Again I'm showing my inexperience on the subject, but what benefit do you get from using software decoding over hardware?

Likewise, out of the listed features:

    - real-time PVR
    - Multi-channel Preview
    - EPG
    - ability to watch and record different channels at the same time

(complete novice so bear with me)

I took the real-time PVR & EPG as features I could expect from the vanilla Skystar1. (abeit I would have to source the programs to do so myself) Multi channel I'm not really concerned with which just leaves record/view different channels. Does this work in the same was as Sky+ in so much I would need a twin LNB?

Basically I'm planning a HTPC enclosed in a small case which as such limits me greatly to add-on cards and more importantly power. Any suggestions / tips more than welcome.
