New sky subscriber, do sky have to do it , how to get just the cards

I am about to purchase sky.
Previously have installed my own multi sat systems.

I have put all the cabling and dishes. phone points in place, loftbox etc, all working.

All I need is the receiver and cards.

Will sky insist on them installing or can I get them to just drop off hardware.

????

Regards

Grahame

Sky will not install to your own wiring (unless the engineer breaks Sky's rules ((at his own peril!!))). The best thing you can do is buy a second hand box (from Ebay/car boot etc) or new box from a satellite specialist under an ASA contract (this way Sky are not responsible for any part of your system and the ASA will have to guarantee the Digibox for 12 months).

You can get a Sky card or cards from Sky without being installed by them. Just ask for a second hand subscriber's contract but it won't be any cheaper monthy's etc.

So, if you have Sky already and you don't know who did the original wiring then they will have to use their own wiring? I hope not, the wife won't be happy if the carpet has to be pulled up!

If they did not fit the wiring themselves how can they guarantee the whole installation for 12 months.

True, but the dish was left there by the old inhabitants. I'm guessing Sky installed it . Hopefully they will have a record of it

We will know if it is own wiring and by the wiring techniques. What I am referring to is (and believe me this happens a lot) is especially on new builds, you knock on the door and the customer rants on about how his sparky (who he assures you knows what he is doing!!) has preinstalled the cable, plastered it into the wall and used these fancy brass coloured faceplates. Of course I am referring to the coax cable and not the telephone cable.

We are not allowed to fit to this sort of wiring for 2 main reasons. Firstly I've never yet been to one that has used the correct cable (often RG6 or single screened aerial cable). Secondly they have no idea of the cabling techniques that are vital for the system to work properly (or as far as Sky are concerned to guarantee their Digibox -- The Digibox remains Sky's property untill the customers has honoured their year's contract).

That's Sky's rules (personally I'd love it if everyone did their own cabling and we just turned up and plugged it into the mains!). Hope that clears things up.

Not strictly true, I believe the box is yours from the start of the contract but if a subsidised subscription install you are a liable to pay them extra if you cancel (or they catch you with phone disconnected and you refuse to connect- highly unlikely I know unless multiroom subscription) before 12 months.

If that was the case then Sky wouldn't be paying me to remove Digiboxes! Sky hand over the box to you when it has been under contract for 12 months (yep when the manufacturer's warranty is up!!). Unless you have bought your box outright (which was about £199 for a standard STB last time I looked)

Is there no waiver of warranty that can be signed? Surely something as simple as that would cure the problem.

On my next house perhaps I should ask sky to install cables before platering is complete, then say come back when I have finished the house, and when u install the box I will commence my contract.

I have not a problem with a self installed system in over 10 years, unlike my sky installed neighbours, RAIN does not affect my picture.

If I provide box, lnb, dish, cable I only need the viewing card from sky.

Sounds like that'll be best for you.

Ask for a secondhand contract when you call to subscribe.

contact your local installer they should be able to sort you out rather than going direct

also it gets your local guy some green im sure he/she will not mind just using your wires as long as it works and you can contact them direct if you have a problem
