Just heard there is a new sky+ box soon to be released, double the storage of a standard box, usb connections, same price as a PVR2.

Yeah read about it on DS, very sceptical but a few people are putting a lot of faith in the rumour. Strange how it could have arrived this close to launch time with little word unless it is a variant of the 80gig PACE SKY+ that has been on the product roadmap for the last year.

Still makes sense to increase the HD size as the cost/supply of the smaller drives must be losing it's attraction but still not convinced USB has any practical use but if there isn't a premium then not an issue:)

Apparantly there are also new boxes coming from Amstrad and Pace, not sure what these are though.

I'm not convinced that they'll be releasing a new model this close to the HD rollout. Unless it's HD compatible of course. :)

It makes sense to release an upgraded substitute for the 2001 spec machine since the market has moved on and 20 hours recording is pathetic when viewed against DTT and DVD/HD units.
Plus you have the benefit of moving production (from all manufacturers) to a single design and taking advantage of cheaper hard drives and other components. A single hardware base also makes writing software so much easier:)

I would quite happily put money on it not having a mpeg4 chipset and all the extras that the HD service requires since that would make far too expensive as a replacement for the standard SKY+ which has years of use left in it thanks to High Def only being an addon and not a replacement for SD channels.

Is hoping for the USB connection to be used to connect and transfer vids to the PC too much? I think so...

    I tend to agree.

You'll no doubt require a potable device that uses NDS hardware to secure the link between it and the SKY+ although I suspect the window for that sort of product has already passed at least at the price point that they would have been considering.

The new PVR3 will have 40 hours of recording space and two USB ports, however like the 160 they will not be functional at present. The boxes are being made by Pace,Amstrad and Thomson. They are due to roll out next week once current stocks of PVR2s are all used.

Sounds like a 160 box with a smaller hard disk in it :)

I wonder if it will have the same DD sound problems as the 160 box ?

2 x 80gig hard drives inside, only one will be active though, the other is owned by sky and will be reserved for future use!

    There is some precedent:)
Ruperts plan for his DirecTV includes buying 20million DVR's and either giving them away or heavily subsidised, the purpose being to make sure everyone has a hard drive recorder in which PPV content can be streamed to overnight and ready to play at a push of a button.
Basically he wants to take on VOD and the DVD rental industry.

Now consider a smaller scale approach by SKY and you can see why dedicated capacity inside SKY+ either from a single large drive or two seperate may have a purpose.

The post by nick270881 could have some basis in fact but lets face it you can make up anything and then claim you are not allowed to divulge details/sources, some people get off on that!
I suspect thousands of people have seen the new SKY+ model after all it has to be made somewhere and if delivery is so close then they must be in the warehouses by now. Of course those with more intimate knowledge are less likely to go spouting off on a public forum and then clam up when asked for further details, all or nothing:)

I would consider the dual hard drive approach to be too expensive right now especially as this model seems to be the direct replacement for the current boxes but the idea of making this new SKY+ the base model in the whole SKY D range with the recording facilites locked unless the subscriber pays makes a lot of sense.
That's another unsubstantiated rumour I have heard:)

I can CONFIRM! (having a pace pvr3 in my hands for all you doubters) that inside this shiny new box is in fact a 160gb hard drive, partitioned into 2 80gb hard drives, one is for 'personal storage' the other is locked/deactivated whatever you want to call it until sky have a use for it!

now whether this is reserved for particular things down the line i dont know, possibly at a later date you will be able to unlock this extra storage space for a small fee! as with the interactive slot on the boxes there is no real use for this yet, but it is clearly an attempt to future-proof, or increase the longevity of the stb's. Rest assured there are many things up the sleeves of mr sky so we shall have to see!

it is out in the vans of sky men all over right now! cosmetically, exactly the same as the 160 box but without the 160 logo, existing stocks of current boxes are being used first so its pot luck if anyone gets one or not for the time being!

Never could understand who at Thomson/SKY thought the 160 logo was a good idea:)

You originally said it was a "new box" - now it's just an old box repackaged. Wish you would get your story straight. If it's the Thomson 160 with dodgy Dolby sound, it's an even better reason to avoid them like the plague

It IS a new box because its not made by thomson, its a pace, there are also some amstrads coming along soon!
My story is straight aswell so whats your problem?

    1. Its a new box made by pace / amstrad - hence pvr3
    2. It has 2 80 gb hard drives (160gb split into 2)
    3. It is available now

    What could be any straighter????

You change your story every time you post. Last time you said "exactly the same as the 160 box but without the 160 logo" - now you're telling us it's a new box by a different manufacturer. And if they're "out in the vans of sky men all over right now" why hasn't anyone said they've got one ? That's definitely the sort of thing that gets people posting, but not one has. I'm still skeptical.

Just thought this may be of interest. After being fobbed off with the Amstrad box for a while, I eventually got Sky to swap for a Pace. I did ask for the PVR2 as I did not know about a new model. Imagine my suprise when the Sky guy turns up with the PVR3 - he said there are very few people with this unit. Well chuffed!!!!

The key word was cosmetically!!!! you do know what that means dont you!

and as the post above says, someone has one already, and at least five people in my area have them because I installed them!

    anyway, the end!

    Well not quite:)

Still some confusion over the actual size of the hard drive.

A poster over at DS has provided some pictures which indicates an 80gig drive (printed on the box). Of course that still allows (at a stretch) that the drive is a 160 and has been partitioned to only allow 80gig accessible under the normal useage.
