    hi,

I am looking to purchase a new sky digibox to replace my old grundig model. It is out of warrenty and has been repaired once at a cost of £60, so I want to purchase a new box.

Can anyone tell me as a current sky subsciber how much will a new box cost me? and where is the best place to purchase one? and will I have a choice on what model/make I receive?

    any help would be appreciated.

This is a good place to look. They stock the Sony VTX-S760U with an optical output, so you can recieve Doldy Digital 5.1, when it's broadcast!!!!

The Sony will not give acces to DD5.1 broadcasts. Only Sky+ boxes can pass on the required digital stream to an external amp.

There's a slim chance some bright spark will hack a firmware together to achieve DD via the Sony 750/760 boxes. Very unlikely though. It seems that Sky will not sanction an offical 'upgrade' via firmware as it wants to give potential Sky+ owners the maximum number of possible reasons to upgrade to it.

Better to at least have a digital output for normal stereo than not though.

Thats strange.......The one I have seen does.

And here is a statement from the company:

"Thank you for your e-mail, please forgive the delay in replying to you.

The Sony VTX-S760U will indeed allow you to receive Dolby Digital,
    including
the latest 5.1 version, when it is broadcast.

You do not have to pay anything extra for Dolby digital but you do need
    to
buy the optical cable which attaches to the optical outputs on the
    receiver.

The total cost is £299 and £9.90 for insurance and delivery anywhere in
    the
    UK

I hope this is of help, please feel free to contact us again if we can
    be of
    further assistance.

    Yours sincerely

    James English (Susat)"

Oh, the box is perfectly willing and able, it's the marketing moneymen behind Sky who now won't let it happen. The DD stream is broadcast with some films on at least one channel but the 750/760 ignore it (and you can't switch audio subchannels as per the old Sky boxes). See Usenet/Google for gripes. There was even talk of a petition to get Sky to sort it out as lots o' peeps bought these specifically to get DD and none of us are.

That email snippet you quote represents either someone being misinformed or salesmanship over truth.

    You are probably right then!

When I said "The one I have seen does", I was refering to the one that was advertised on this web site. But I was obviously far to trusting of salesmen :(

Never mind, thanks for the info anyway!!!

If you are willing to spend £299 on a SONY then buy SKY+ for the same price then sell the Quad LNB and Hard Drive to recoup some money.
