Reviews of the new Sigma lenses are coming on line, link below to the new 100-400 F5-6.3 OS Contemporary -

Sigma C 100-400 mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM review - Introduction - LensTip.com

Am considering chopping in my Canon 70-200 F4 IS L and 1.4x for one of these. Particularly as it s small (relatively), lightweight and costs about £800. The other alternatives are the big 150-600's or the expensive canon 100-400, looks like it is a good all rounder.

General comments from the review - optically looks pretty good, on a par with the Canon 100-400 IS L no less, looks pretty sharp wide open and 200mm seems to be the sweet spot. OS give approx. 4 stops. Max aperture a bit slow and AF also potentially a bit slow.

here's another - Sigma's new 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG HSM OS Contemporary lens is small, fast, strong and very sharp - DIY Photography

Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM C Lens Image Quality

The digital picture has image comparison but no review yet, against the original canon 100-400 it seems to be sharper particularly wide open and holds it's own against the MkII. Compared to my 70-200 the Sigma holds it's own upto to 200mm and then is better once you add the 1.4x to my current lens.

Looks a useful lens if you can live with the slower aperture.

I've been watching this with some interest as combined with a high res camera (such as the upcoming D820) for cropping it could give me a lighter alternative to my D750 and 150-600mm. I just wish it was f5.6 at the long end. I don't know how much weight and cost this would have added though, would it have really been that much though?

"yes" - (weight)

And f4.5 or f4.0 at the bottom end would have been nice as well. Guess they had to discriminate themselves form the Nikon 80-400 and canon 100-400. Still, looking at the sharpness comparisons with my current kit I think I would get more use out of this than the 70-200 f4 and extender. Got a while before I will need to make a decision so hopefully the price may drop a bit in the meantime, seen it at £750 from one supplier already.

Two issues I have with the f6.3 is the smidgen extra DOF, but more so the ability to use it with all AF points. I recently returned the D500 as I could not use the outer AF point with my 150-600mm at the long end, apparently there wasn't enough light hitting the AF sensor caused by a combination of the ridiculously wide AF spread and that the lens is not letting enough light in. OK it's a rare one, but as AF points are getting spread further and further across the frame lenses like this might not be fully compatible with future bodies.

Look what the postman dropped off today!

Traded in my canon 70-200 f4 IS and 1.4x extender and got the sigma 100-400 OS Contemporary. Not had time to play yet but will post some sample images in the next few days.

This will give me that extra bit of reach on my 6D and going by most reviews will not suffer much, if anything, on image quality when full open, we will see.

Pity he only left it with you 'cos the neighbour was out :rotfl:

I was happy with it when I hired it for the F1. Only thing is the OS is not very good though.

Did you have the os on setting 1 or 2. Iirc 1 is for static subject, 2 is for panning.

Tried both for static and panning. Normally when OS, VR or VC is activated you can really see a difference in the viewfinder, it wobbles around a lot less, but with the Sigma 100-400 I was really struggling to see it working. I thought it might just be my copy but after some research it appears that that's just how it is. Don't let it put you off though, it's a nice lens and you can still do slow shutter panning

Nice, love the second shot. Will check it out over the weekend, will set it to 200mm and 1/50s and see if it can produce sharp images (2 stops no not too challenging) and then reduce from there.

I don't have the best panning technique tbh, 1/50 is probably my limit for getting a large number of hits, after this it's few and far between ;)

So, had a very quick play today with the Sigma on my Canon 6D. very rough and ready but must admit fairly impressed with static subjects.

Camera on Canon 6D - note perspective of my phone camera make this look longer than it actually is -
1) Hood on in stowed position - interestingly you can't use the zoom ring with it in this position ???

Tests are screen shots on 1920x1080 monitor, raw files imported into DXO11 (free version) and only preset settings (no manual tweaking) with correct camera/lens correction module. 100% crops shown, pictures of the back garden (20mm range)/facing house (35mm range).

4) Quick indoor OS test - 400mm, f7.1, ISO5000, 1/25, OS Mode 1 (4 stops)

When i get some real world pics I will put them up. But happy with the sharpness even in the corners wide open. OS look OK but nothing to shout home about but the indoor shot at 400mm and 1/25 looks pretty good, may be posture (seated) rather than standing for the outdoor shots. On the face of it this looks as sharp at 100mm as my Canon 70-200 F4 IS L and pretty much as sharp at 400 (significantly better than the 70-200 with the 1.4x extender). Happy chappie !
