Been playing this over the weekend. Heritage of Kings it is called.

IMHO it is not a patch on the previous games and becomes more of an almagamation of warcraft (heroes with special powers and a story arc) and age of empires, while not capturing either.

Done away with are all the special quirks I used to love such as the serfs levelling the land before building, and the farmer sewing his crops and raising his pigs.

The whole can't build beyond your borders has disappeared as well, meaning you can build literally anywhere on the map, which detracts from the original gameplay significantly.

It is an OK game, but has lost almost all of it's charm and originality by doing the trick of apeing the games that aped the original settlers games.

I was left with a very bitter taste in my mouth, especially after enjoying the first 2 settlers games, and being a bit disappointed with the latter 2.

    6/10 :( :thumbsdow

That's a shame. Settlers 2 is still one of my favourite games to play, I wouldn't like to even think about the number of hours I've wasted watching my Peeps walking up and down roads.

I just loved Settlers - Serf City, and the first 2 Warcrafts (and Starcraft). Now it seems both series have shot theirselves in the knee. WC's view is really cr*ppy I think. Heroes of Might and Magic still holds its own, but the 4th was worse in creating the atmosphere than the 3rd part.

Why don't they make any good games nowadays..... :boring:

I was going to buy this at the weekend but happened to see PC Zone had reviewed it a gave it a rubbish rating.

So I used some vouchers I had kicking around to get Civilisation 3 deluxe instead for nothing.

I had the first Settlers game for the Amiga years ago. I had the same fascination of watching them go about their lives - most of the time I played custom games without a CPU player just to watch them all work lol. Better than an ant farm.

I think Civ3 is good game, but not on par with 1 or 2! Very good, still.

I was only joking, I was refering it will take Gregs time up. I agre it is a good game but no way as good as Civ 1 and II. And has a very bad interface.

same here lol, i could never bring myself to play with computer opponents and watch my towns get demolished.. sending the little guy out to test all the rocks, growing a big farm and such was fun enough for me.. i once actually made a town so big it filled over half the map. I bought a ltd edition copy of Settlers IV for the PC which had the game, an expansion pack, and 4 settlers figures :) i hope one day they're worth something..

I haven't heard anything certain about Civ4. I've heard rumours about a predominantly hexagon based grid, along with squares and pentagons to make entire map spherical

Got feed up of Civ III already? :D

If you have not got Civ II it is worth checking out although not quite as pretty as Civ III I find it it is a better game and as a more friendly interface. Civ III is a cats fur ball comparerd to it.

Sounds like Populous: The Beginning to me! I actually did my work experience at Bullfrog testing that game.

I definitely agree with Garrett when it comes to Civ2. To be perfectly honest, the only games I play on my computer these days are Civ2, Settlers 2 and Minesweeper. :)

Any HOMM fans here? I think Homm2 was great but 3rd blew me away. I've played it for 5-6 years, not regularly but when I've got the inspiration. It just takes all the time when it gets exciting.. :D 4th part hasn't yet done the trick for me. (bought it 2 years ago)

Recently I purchased new Homm3 collection, the original and both expansion packs included, for 5€ = 3,5£!!

You could always try the Activision Call To Power games. There's a lot more emphasis on steal and unconventional warfare, and there's an infrastructure system so you don't have to mess about micromanaging settlers to build farms and mines.
If you google "Apolyton" you'll find a site that has tonnes of mods most of the Civ games.

I wasn't that keen on Populous The Beginning actually, EvilJohn. It looked good, but it felt too much like a typical, shallow C&C clone.
Populous 2 iI think I prefer the most, though, as a child, I spent much more time playing Pop 1 on the Master System

HOMM2 is definitely a great game.

Obuggrit, I agree with you on Populous: The Beginning. It was interesting enough, looked nice and had a few interesting bits but didn't live up to the previous instalments. TBH, I preferred the versions I was playing about 8 months before release - they completely redesigned all of the levels! :)

I just got 'Settlers : Heritage of Kings' last night and played through the first three maps. Have to agree with Game Gurus comments as to the similarity between 'Age of Empires' and 'War Craft'. No longer do you send your geologist out to find mines or agonise over where to put your farms etc. Took me a while before I realised in the new game you can put a farm on a stone hill right next to the mine.
I'm not sure why they completely changed a game that has a strong following into what they think we want now, reminds me a bit of how the UFO : Enemy unknown etc. series got completely changed towards the end of it's life.
