REL have announced the Storm 5 here

This is smaller than the previous version yet REL claim that the new version will go down to 15Hz at -3Db in room which seems rather good.

As with other new RELs this one also comes with a remote control and a range of six real wood veneers.

I was speaking to some chaps at Sevenoaks Sound & Vision and they said that this new version of the Storm is very very good and alot better than the Strata 5 should be interesting to hear it as i used to own the Strata.

It does indeed, 15hz +/-3db with a 10" driver and a 200watt amp. Now that's made me chuckle.

How does this sub compare to an old STADIUM for films AND music?

    Thanks,

    MJ.

At the moment only REL know the answer to that as it hasn't been released.

There isn't even enough information in the public domain for us to make an educated guess over.

Interesting, any news on price yet? It seems REL have concentrated on releasing new subs in the ST range, but not the Q range (apart from the Q150E Mk2 which was a while ago and only revised), why is this?

There is likely to be a new sub in the Q series soon called the Q1000. It will have two 500 watt amps in a push/pull configuration.

Yeah. A while back, REL made some mutterings about developing a sub that "...would teach the American market a thing or two" or something like that. This Q1000 looks to be it. What are the drivers and their arrangement, crustyloafer? - two Q400 drivers a la M&K350?

Sorry, don't have any more details, have just heard odd mutterings about it now and again.

Anyone heard the Storm 5 yet? How would it compare to a Stadium III? Thanks.

If you can wait a couple more months I would suggest that you visit the annual show at Bristol where I have no doubt the new range of REL subs will be on display along with a few other interesting bits of kit from other manufacturers.

I collected a brand new Storm 5 on Saturday morning from my local, friendly and helpful dealers to try out at home. So far I'm very, very impressed with it. I might be wrong, but I think the Storm 5 has 150w amp not a 200w as previously mentioned.

I am now wondering how the new Stadium will compare. Can anyone please tell me... ?

I think it is a 200w in the Storm 5. I'd heard that REL are really proud of the Storm 5 and they believe that it outperforms the £1500 Stadium 3. I have not compared the two side-by-side but I went with the Storm 5 because of it's compact size, non-ported design and remote control. Both are supposed to be great sub bass units.

You are right about the 200w. I think I must have been thinking of the Strata; I'm new to Rel but have quickly beocome a fan. All my research has only occurred last week. I'm about to phone my dealer and order a Storm 5.

    Thanks

Blimey! I don't want my kit signature that big, anyone know how to make it smaller - I used the smallest font size too?!

Amazing!!! Ordered it on Monday and it arrived at the dealers Tuesday morning, so I immediately collected it and installed it. Very nice indeed. Very musical and produces more than enough sub bass for movies in my 26ft x 12ft room.

The cherry finish is a bit paler than the Kef Refs but still very nice.

Happy with it? I ordered mine on Saturday and it's in today!

Where did you get yours - I got mine at Sevenoaks hi-fi.

Got mine from Home Media in Maidstone. I bought my Kef Refs from them and have established a good relationship with them, as they offer a friendly and personal service.

The main reason for investing in the Storm 5, is that since recently buying the Kef Refs my interest in listening to music has be re-kindled and I wanted a sub that would compliment the Kefs better than the M&K. The Storm does the job very nicely and is so easy to tweak with the remote. I can set it so you hardly know it's working - until you turn it off! Then it's immediately noticable by its absence.

It's awesome with movies too. Very dynamic and never trips over itself. The bass it produces is smooth and deep, very musical and acurately controlled. So, it's so far, so good. Hope you are pleased with yours.

    Ash

Out of interest, what settings do you have yours on.

    Mine are:

    LFE gain: 36
    HFE gain: 36
    Frequency HFE: 46
    Phase: 0

My Proac Response 2's go down to about 40 hz in room and my room is quite small at 15ft by 18ft. Thanks.

MJ, I have made use of the 4 presets and have saved different settings for:-

    1. Music, ie CD's Hi 40, Lo off, Fr 38, Slam 0
    2. Movies on DVD Hi 50, Lo 50, Fr 36, Slam 3
    3. Programmes via Sky Hi 56, Lo 56, Fr 44, Slam 3
    4. Music DVD's Hi 44, Lo off, Fr 36, Slam 0

These settings are sometimes tweaked depending on the recording or transmission.

Yesterday, I ran a long coax lead from the LFE out of the Storm and ran it round the room, to the opposite corner, to my M&K VX100. I set it to it's lowest frequency and turned the gain quite low, so it can hardly be heard, but when combined with the Storm 5 the result is awesome! The room is really pressurised now. Room is 12ft x 26ft but I'm set up across one end of the room rather than down the length of it, if you know what I mean!

That is exactly how a sub should be set up. If you can hear a subwoofer then it's too loud.

    They go down to 40hz.

You're dead right Ian. It's only when I turn the sub off by the remote that I can really appreciate that it was actually working, except when a dynamic section of movie is playing like the cannon fire in Master & Commander or when the shark is trying to get the fish in Finding Nemo, when it's obvious that the sub must be producing the bass, because I know that there is no way that the main speakers could produce such a deep and powerful bass.

How far out from the corner walls is your Storm? Mine is about 2.5 inches equidistant from both the back and side walls. Is it fair to say that the closer into the corner the sub is the "boomier" the bass. Moving it out a little makes the bass "punchier". Is this correct?

Thanks for all your help and info.

My computer died last week and I haven't had internet access since. I'm on my wife's iBook G4 now, which is nice!

Mine is about 6" away from the corner. The whole floor in my room is solid teak parquet which is laid on concrete, - so very solid!!!

I used to own a Strata III and I feel sad that REL seem to be going more and more down the "pretty, little, high WAF factor" design route :( Where style and diminutive proportions rank above true LFE performance. I can only pray SVS dont go the same way

Have you considered selling some kit off to reduce your sig size!!, now that would be extreme :)
