To me its an act of desperation and a bit of a gimmic when they start doing stuff like this. The PS2 is now well past its sell by date.

But I am sure it will work, I have bought one anyway ! Should arrrive tommorow.

It is a shame they did not release it in that format in the first place :(

I'm not sure why you say it's "an act of desperation" and "a bit of a gimmick". It was always expected that Sony would release a redesigned PS2, but it was really thought to be just before the launch of the PS3, just as the PSone was released just before the PS2.

This new design is much cheaper to manufacture and gives the format a new lease of life.

Whilst the PS2 is the oldest of the consoles, it's all about the games and whilst many multiformat releases may be better on the XBox, the PS2 versions are still very good.

Probably because the original machine was ffist manufacturer in late 1999 for the March 2000 release. It wasn't possible at that time to release the PS2 as small as the new version is now. Technology improves year after year (that's stating the very obvious).

I am not sure that is entirely true in this case, the main reason for the reduction in size is the removal of space for HDs etc.

I understand as they improve design they will reduce PCB sizes, but considering what Nintendo have squeezed into the Gamecube, I don't see any reason why the other console manfacturers cannot acheive similar levels of reduction.

just got one myself today, it looks like a toy it's that small!!
I think its good value for money and have bought one for all the exclusive games which arent on any other system (i have a xbox)
The only thing i do not like is the fact that it has a top opening cd lid instead of a cd tray loading gizmo.

Never heard that before. Maybe its a new feature ? I got a scart cable to use with it as supplied lead is only fit for the bin. Anyone know where you can get a decent component cable for the PS 2. Not set mine up yet, does the new PS2 have an optical audio out like the xbox ?????

I didnt know this either ! I guess I should go and set it up. Got a mate comming round tonight for some San Andreas.

I would have thought the top loading cd is to save space and reduce costs.

I have only bought this for the new grand theft auto game. Maybe GT 4. Its really pretty dated now and the graphics / sound have always seemed poor to me compared to the xbox but worth a play for the couple of decent exclusive titles available, bit like the GC really....

I would be alot happier if it turns out the new version has prog scan and digital audio out capability, will look much better on the PJ.

It is a nice small piece of kit no doubt about it. Small but still very dated. Interesting to see the built in ethernet and usb ports.

Not read the intructions yet, can someone eleborate on the Prog Scan coment. The graphics on these things need all the help they can get. Big time.

The PS2 has always been able to output 480p on games that allow it via a component lead. All you do is set the output to Component out in the settings and select the option in a compatable game. The old PS2 has a digital out for sound which is built in, unlike on the X-box where you need an extra lead.

I personally think it's great that we've had a console that's been around for over 4 years and is still going strong. takes me back to the speccy & C64 days where games developers pushed the machine further than you thought it was possible! New games like Ace Combat 5 look absolutely stunning on the PS2, as does GT4 and I never thought i'd see them get graphics of that quality out of it!

I've got all three machines and currently it's still the PS2 that get's the most play, however that'll probably change when PES4 and Halo 2 come out on the XBox :D .

I never had a games console since the old old PS (which I got rid of for £120 with only 4games) LOL

Anyway popped down to ARGOS today check this deal:

    Slim new design PS2
Free Reasonale design/make controller (not the genuine one)
Free DVD remote (not the genuine one)
Fifa 2005 (or could have had latest burnout game or latest golf game)
    £10 argos voucher

    £104.99!!!

I also went for the 3 years accidental damage/breakdown free replacement thingy for extra £16.99!

    Bargain I say!

It has the IR sensor, optical out, network port, is just bigger than the size of a game box, very sexy and worth every penny!

Thanks for that will get one ordered. Bargain. Incidentally went to a computer fair yesterday and picked up an PS2 svideo cable to see if it was anybetter than RGB scart. Shouldnt be but thought it was worth a try.

Can anyone confirm if the new PS2 has prog scan capability ?????

One other point I also got a couple of cheap surge protectors that claim to also "Clean" the power output. I saw a noticable improvement from the projector on all sources when run through this. Dont ask me why, I have heard of this before but never thought I would actually see it.

They were only around £7 I think. If you live in the Manchester area I got them from the Bowlers Computer fair which is on every Saturday.

del boy - yes the old style ps2 has prog scan capability, but as someone has previously stated it will only function with games that have that feature in them. Games that i have come across that had prog-scan are Tekken 4, Prince of Persia and Getaway(although i couldn't get it to work, it only ever came out pink) i'm sure that there are other games out there that also have the feature. To ensure that you can output the progressive signal you will need to change the video out mode in the browser menu from RGB to ypbr.

Can somebody give me 10 PS2 exclusives that are must-buys?

I am considering getting one you see.

I can only think of ICO. I don't consider GT4 a must buy by the way...

If obviously depends on what you like, for myself I bought a PS2 for these exclusive titles :-

    ICO
    Downhill Domination
    Star Ocean
    FFX
    FFX-2
    Tales of Disgaea
    La Pucelle
    Xenosaga
    Suikoden III
    Front Mission 3
    Kingdom Hearts

    Soon to come

    FFX12

Now I get the feeling there is not one game on that list you would consider must buy. For me they are all games I really wanted/want to play on the PS2.

For Japanese RPG type games the PS2 is great and unsurpassed.

    FFX
    FFX-2
    GRADIUS V
    VIRTUA FIGHTER 4 EVO
    ICO
    FRONT MISSION 3
ROMANCE OF THE 3 KINGDOMS 8
    TALES OF DISGAEA
    EYE TOY (VARIOUS VERSIONS)
    GT3 & SOON 4

Those are my choices (the GT games are in there as I view them as must have games), however there are other exclusive games (that people rave about that aren't my thing) that are listed below :-

    GTA: San Andreas
Ratchet & Clank 2 & soon 3 (been getting great reviews)
    Forbidden Siren
    Suikoden III

Considering what you can pick one up for now they are definately worth having for what are (IMO) the best side scrolling shooter, RPG(s), Beat em up, platform/adventure, strategy & party games on any system. I've obviously missed Pro Evo 4 off my list as it will soon be a cross platform game. Ace Combat 5 has also been getting good reviews, 9.3 from IGN -
