AS far as I know the Viera TH42PE50 is a replacement to the Viera TH42PE30. The 50 does away with the SD slot. But other than that I have no clue...

Be interested to see myself as I am buying the PE30 next week.

    Cheers

Not alot of info about at the moment but the differences i can see are the new G8 panel what ever that means and new electronics. How much of a diference to PQ this will make is not known.

Do u think the prices will get lower? The eshop price from panasonic is around 2150 which is alot lower then the pe30 which was 3700 and that could be had for around a grand cheaper elsewhere online.

i have just purchased the pe50 the difference is that the speakers are no longer on the side but underneath the screen making it slighty smaller in size and it does not have the pc slots that the 30 has on the front, other than that it looks more or less the same

the picture is excellent and what you would expect from panasonic, as I said it appears a lot smaller than the 30 but just as good looking, if you have a smaller room i would recommend this over the 30 as it quite a few inches smaller at the sides. but its basically the same tv

im most interested in is it's performance with digital tv (ntl sky) compared to 6th gen panels. the pd50 is meant to have new noise reduction electronics. I am really thinking of upgrading my PW6 to this model.

    An upgrade from a PW6 to a PE50?

Surely to the PV500 is the only serious option...

I have the pe50 all set up and the picture is great with Ntl, I do have some very expensive scart leads, phone and component leads and I am very pleased with the result :D

Ive ordered the new 42PE50. We sell them at work and we had it in for display last week. Its amazing! The main differences are: the new G8 panel which includes a new 'black filter' so you can get that nice rich black depth but without loosing any detail, new upgraded noise reduction, upgraded colour re-production (I think the PE30 had 16.7 million colour output this one has 8.2 billion!) and the speaker placment like Kingo said. I set it up at work with a Sony RDR-GX900 with some Monster component leads and it looks amazing! I played Star Wars E1 and Lord of the Rings: TFOTR and they both looked great! My advice is anyone thinking of the PE50 or a PE30; go for the PE50!

Isn't it the case that the PE50 has only 2 onboard speakers and the soon to be released PV500 has five? In addition, the PV500 is HD ready and has other extra bits and features (PIP etc). Spec sheet available from http://www.av-sales.com/plasma/html/panasonic_th-42pv500b.html (pdf file lists all the new Viera 2005 models)

I have to say, I was/am tempted by the pe50, but await the price difference on the pv500. Might be worth the wait?

Against the orginal question - the PE30 range had better speaker arangement (i.e. five onboard speakers)

I WANT ONE AND I WANT ONE NOW - but i must wait for the PV500 reviews. I must. No really I must.

I'm waiting on the 500 myself, but I've just been looking at the specs, and the 50s are definitely more compact (due to not having the extra side speakers)... Something to factor in!

The PE50 is a lot more compact than the PE30, mainly because of the speakers. I would definately chose the former. As the PV500 - well where does this whole contrast issue fit in? I don't really understand it tbh. Also, I really like the look of the PE50 - so why do they have to make the PV500 so much bigger!! for some extra speakers.. boo..

Although the PE50 is only a ED resolution screen, can it still take 720p50 and 1080i50 over dvi/hdmi with hdcp?

The PE50 doesn't have a DVI or HDMI input. That was a showstopper for me, quite frankly I was amazed when I found out!

    Cheers,

The PA50/PE50's are indeed matte black, very nicely designed, slicker than the PE30's. Though I'm not a big fan of the lower part design (speakers area "grid").

They don't have any DVI/HDMi input, no VGA either. But, contrary to the PE30's, they do support 720p50 via Component (in fact they support all of 720p50/60 and 1080i50/60 via Y,Pb,Pr). Personally I miss the VGA input (had to get a G.C. with YUV output support for my HTPC, 49€ (~35£) so no big deal), but for the time being unless you already have a DVI/HDMi equipped h/w then these aren't mandatory. :)

Which they will eventually become one day or the other. By that time I will have fully enjoyed SD on my quite cheap 42PA50 (a terrific VfM for sure!) and will be ready to upgrade to "HD Ready" craze. Now bring us these HDTV broadcasts already...!!

I went to a TV shop in London on Friday and they had a Panasonic trade price list. The TH-37PV500B had a dealer price of about £2100 (ex VAT). I thought they were not allowed to publish/set prices.

if the u.s. TH-42PD50U is the same as the uk 42pe50, then it's another fine example of the americans getting alot more inputs than us.
why is this the case?!?!?!! i'd sure like 2 comp inputs + hdmi!!
