    SC-HT870 is brand new.

    RMS Total Power 1000w
    Front 170w x 2 ( 1khz, 6 Ohms, 10% THD ) RMS
    Centre 260w ( 1khz, 4 Ohms, 10% THD ) RMS
    Surround 70w x2 ( 1khz, 4 Ohms, 10% THD ) RMS
    Subwoofer 260w ( 100hz, 4 Ohms, 10% THD ) RMS

    DIN Total Power 750w
    Front 140w x 2 ( 1khz, 6 Ohms, 1% THD )
    Centre 180w ( 1khz, 4 Ohms, 1% THD )
    Surround 55w x 2 ( 1khz, 4 Ohms, 1% THD )
    Subwoofer 180w ( 100hz, 4 Ohms, 1% THD )

THD means Transient Harmonic Distortion, it sounds nasty so ten per cent of it will be unpleasant. One per cent is more tolerable but you'll still turn it down to lower levels to achieve optimum performance.
On paper this system looks like it will play really loud, in practice, the inefficient small drive unit speakers supplied will soak up a lot of power without turning it to sound. Don't expect it to be THAT loud. Having said that the output is higher than most all-in-ones and the sound quality may be quite decent.
Separates could be assembled for the same money with better performance but may not suit your other requirements.

there isn't even Dolby Digital EX on that. Surely all channels should get the same power too, for an even spread of sound (possible exception of the sub)

Panasonic HT systems can EASILY be beaten by even the likes of Pioneer all-in-ones let alone true separates systems

they probably can be beaten or out performed but for 400 quid dvd player amp and speaker package sounds prety good to me there is nothing else for that sort of price that comes close (if there is let me now) the pioneer dvs990 is about 400 wats of music for the same price of the panasonic wich is 700 guess ile have to wait till its available to find out if its anything like its predecesor scht900 then it should be ok
