    Hi all,
    To anyone who's interested..

I've just spoken to Fred at manowa and he advised me that there will be some new firmware available in very shortly (i.e. next week at the latest) that will provide for better plasma support and hopefully sort out the distorted video problem on my Pioneer 433MXE! Good news if true!

    Cheers,
    Andy.

That is excellent news - took delivery of my 3m DVI cable today and await my V880 with feverish anticipation. I was willing to put up with 480p playback on non-2.35:1 material but it looks as though I won't have to now. Cheers for chasing that up.

No probs, I'll believe it when I see it is all I can say! If it does sort it out I'll be very happy, PQ is amazing (almost as good as my HTPC and far better than any other DVD player I've seen). And the fact it plays divx & mp3s and JPGs is a nice bonus!

    Cheers,
    Andy.

That certainly is good news Andy, do you know if there is a fix for the sticking issue?

Do you know if it will enable the custom dvi settings menu? I'd like to get 1:1
pixel mapping working on my HS10?

I guess we'll just have to wait and see - I get the feeling from the sceptical nature of the post that the bloke on the phone might have been saying anything to give himself some peace!!! :)

No it wasn't like that, it's just I don't believe anything until I see it with my own eyes. Fred was quite confident it would sort the problem out. I don't know if it enables the custom dvi settings menu although that would be an obvious way of tackling the issue, the problem then is though how do you know what the settings should be!

    Cheers,
    Andy.

    Hi Andy,

I have a question for you, hope you don't mind that I put this across in this thread.

I also have a 433MXE and is planning to get this Momitsu DVD player, which I am happy to learn that it works via the 5002 DVI. Yes, there is still some issue with it, and hopefully a new firmware will address that.

My question - Since I have not officially 'buy' the Momitsu yet, just want to explore - What do you think of the combination of a Zinwell Brite-view scaler plus a top Pioneer progressive player, would this produce an equally good picture? Given that the new brite-view is also shipping with DVI output.

    Thanks.

I can't say for sure but I don't think it would produce as good a picture. This is because the Momitsu is producing a purely digital picture from a digital source.

If the Brite-view takes a DVI input *and* produces a DVI output, it will probably be just as good. However, if you have to feed the Brite-view with an analogue input (component, S-Video etc), it will not be as good as the purely digital Momitsu.

Tomorrow morning for me - please post your findings ASAP though.

I set up my Momitsu last night and the picture quality is indeed astonishing - the onboard progressive scan isn't exactly disastrous but the DVI canes it. Now if only they'd produce a player with a component *input* so we can make use of the scaler and deinterlacer chip :)

The release notes look interesting, especially the plasma TV bit!

As somebody on avsforum has mentioned the release notes for the a version of the firmware (for newer units) doesn't mention the 'Improve plasma compatability' bit, a worrying sign! I'm confused about what to burn at the moment cos when I use winrar and unzip the zip file I downloaded it says there's a readme.txt and another archive file in there! Can't suss it out...

    Cheers

Burn the iso file as an image, I used dvddecrypter and it worked like a charm.

I used the firmware for the older units as I have a Brainwave, custom
menu is still not enabled. Added are extra settings for Panasonic AE300.

Well I would have tried it, except that according to the readme's I'm supposed to use Ver.091203a based on the serial number. Since the only fixes apparently in there are ...

    1. Updated 09-12-03alpha.

    2. Match more CD/DVD media.

    3. Improve DivX MP4 play back quality.

    4. Add firmware information Display in "INFO"

    ... and I don't have a problem with any of these, I think I'll pass :(

Still, thanks for the heads-up, I'll be keen to see what results everyone else gets.

    Cheers, Carl.

Just updated my unit with Firmware A - it has made no difference to Pioneer MXE performance whatsoever. I have Firmware B burnt onto CD as well and I'm very tempted to try it such is my frustration level.

    What a shame :(

Can you explain these extra settings a little more? We get nothing like this using Firmware A.

Yeah same here, still the same issue with my plasma. It's not that it's a major issue cos as I've said the majority of stuff has borders at the top and bottom so this problem doesn't manifest itself but it would be nice to get it sorted!
There must be a reason why firmware b shouldn't be used, haven't a clue what it is though! Strange only that one said anything about improved plasma compatability though!

    Cheers,
    Andy.

I've emailed technical support asking why only the earlier machines have had the plasma update in this release. Any chance of having a chat with your direct contact?

Yes, many movies are 2.85 to 1 so you don't see the problem, but any 16:9 stuff does suffer IMHO.

You know what, I tried the DVI custom timings menu last night (press 9 7 1 3 when on the video settings menu) and contrary to what other people have said I found I could change values on that menu (I changed the width to 1025 from 1024, wouldn't recommend it cos the picture just went haywire, must have been some of the other values in that menu it didn't like cos I can't believe just changing the width had the effect it did). Anyway, does anyone know how I can work out what the values should be for DVI 768 on the Pioneer 433MXE so I can try them?

    Cheers

    Andy,

That sounds about right. I know from playing with powerstrip on a pc into various DVI cards that tweaking a single value can play havoc with the output. You're messing with the timings, so even a small change can throw out the sync.

I'd suggest that, maybe, if you can get some powerstrip timings for the MXE from the HTPC forums that might be a good starting point ? Have to admit I've never really got my head round video card timing params although I have a mate with an MXE who seems to know what they're all about. He's also interested in the Momitsu so maybe I'll just drop by sometime soon.

Thanks for the access to the custom timings menu - I'd been wondering how to get there. As you said, it seems to work, it's just knowing what numbers to put in.

    Cheers, Carl.

I've put up an appeal on the HCPC forum. Surely a calibration expert like Gordon@Convergent would know these settings?

I've just read a posting on the AVSforum saying that Custom Settings on *all* V880 firmware has been disabled. Quite why we have access in the first place, I don't know. However, apparently there is going to be another firmware update next month, and Custom Settings will be enabled.

A new firmware version has just been released, but once again it is just for the engineering samples 0100-6000! Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Just an update here. I am currently in possession of a beta version of the next firmware. The full release will occur in two weeks time, I am told.

The beta version I have doesn't have the extra resolutions present in the last 06000-30000 firmware, but it does have tweaked versions of the normal DVI settings.

480p now works fine on my Pioneer plasma (it previously shifted to the right), but 768p still has the sellotape effect (although it seems to be different, it's just as irritating!).

I've reported my findings to Manowa Technical Support. I will happily email the firmware to any one who wants it.

A word of warning though - the new firmware region locks your player to R1 and the hack menu code has changed to UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, RIGHT, LEFT if you want to unlock it again.

The next edition of the firmware, due in a fortnight, will have the Custom Resolution Settings menu enabled.
