Lots of rumours so far..

Only thing confirmed is that the gold chip going in can support upto 5mp camera, also foxxconn have confirmed the shipment order for 3G iphones.

Internal GPS / Look / What the cam mp will actually be. etc Are all up for grabs.

I rang CPW a few days ago to ask if they had any 8GB iPhones. The chap who answered said that the 8GB and 16GB were showing as discontinued on their system.

He also said that he thought there was going to be a 24GB and 32GB version coming out which would be 3G phones but couldn't say when.

However I wouldn't take this as fact.

Its imminent thats for sure but as to what it will include its anyones guess.

It wont be a massive jump above what we have already, expect 3G and increased capacities but not much else as Apple will drip feed small upgrades rather than having one huge one.

Of course we know nothing, and part of Apple's ability to keep everything secret includes the leaking of false rumours to disable real leaks.

I don't agree about the "drip feed" idea. I believe this is intended to be a fixed platform with a huge catalogue of software that works on any iPhone, and the first model was just a necessary stage in the long project of Apple's first phone. If I'm right, I would expect the opposite: everything else that is intended to be standard in the iPhone platform hardware should be included this time, and then we'll get drip fed updates.

3G is certain, GPS is IMO certain; it's now very cheap to add. I would hope to see a front camera in some form (second camera or current camera swivels toward tiny mirrors inside rear cover), but I am less confident about that. Note that Apple has put a webcam in every iMac and notebook for several years now, and having one in the iPhone is inevitable; I think it's doable now, and I've favoured the swivel idea ever since I saw the corner location of the original camera and the full area glass over the iPhone.

Some time in the next four weeks seems certain.

Running out of stock worldwide now suggests release before WWDC (9th June). OTOH AT&T have a 30 day no questions return policy, and why wouldn't you return your iPhone if a better one was available inside the 30 days? That argues for a full 30 days of low availability.

There is a small chance that it will ship soon (e.g. tomorrow), with actual capabilities other than 3G not enabled until the 2.0 software release a month later.

A juicy rumour is that it will ship sooner, and an additional device in the range (iPod touch, iPhone . . . ), iTablet? will be launched at WWDC.

One reason that it's run out so fast is that unlockers making $100 a phone reselling all over the world are buying up as many as they can for fear of the new iPhone having an unhackable period of several months, as this iPhone has had.

Final piece of the jigsaw. .Mac (Apples web service) may be an integral part of iPhone 2.0, perhaps paid for out of carrier revenue sharing, perhaps making iPhone a real Blackberry+Exchange challenger for consumers/small business with push mail and calendar.

Can someone explain in broad terms what 3G is and why it is good that the new iPhone (should it arrive) will be a 3G phone.

Thank you from a mobile tech jargon illiterate.

When was the iphone first released in the uk?and how long did it take before people starting unlocking them?

I reckon it'll be announced as available during the Jobsnote at WWDC - it'll be Steve's "and one more thing..." surprise.

hoping for gps, improved camera and 32gb storage personally, not too fussed about 3G. As soon as its confirmed that unlocking software works on it I'll be off to the shop...

the leaked photo's I've seen (whether photochop or not) make it seem thicker (2.5mm aparently) but slightly smaller - its also glossy all over now, available in black or white.

It took a good few months and even then there was none of this one-click ziphone/iliberty unlocking, I remember unlocking my 1.0.2 US iPhone and it took 45+ minutes and was extremely technical. It took over 6 months to get a mass-market unlock out there.

The "leaked" photos are just cases for the current iphone

Hopefully the same unlocking methods will be unchanged - but I reckon the new phone will come with firmware 2.0 pre-installed...

From reading about the new iPhone may take a while to hack and unlock.
I think it is that, that has made me decide to gor for a second hand 8/16GB version that i can use on T-Mobile.
Dont think i can wait for it to be hacked or afford it on O2 o unlocked as it will probably be a tad more epxensive

what makes u think that it would take a while to hack and unlock? we have more users and more demand so hackers would be as keen as mustard. Not only that but the opening up of the dev side means more access to tools and information...

i think that i may happen quickly, but i would like to know on what basis you made your comments? :smashin:

How can anyone possibly know how long its going to take, it could take 5 minutes but it could never happen. Until its out its all conjecture.

Is there any news on whether its still going to be an O2 exclusive ?

From 9to5mac:

"O2 boss Matthew Key says the 3G iPhone will be unveiled “in the coming weeks”.

Key made the comment when speaking to press and analysts after the announcement of the network’s first-quarter results this morning. He’s the Chairman and Chief Exec of O2 owner, Telefónica Europe, and he said his company would be making an announcement with Apple in the “coming weeks”.

Key declined to say exactly when the announcement would take place, saying, “that’s more of a question for Apple,” while promising a joint announcement. He also confirmed the network to hold a multi-year exclusive agreement with Apple for selling the iPhone in the UK and Ireland."
