New Lyngdorf TDAI-1120 Streaming amp

@harkpabst Or you could have read P11 of the manual
Sure. Which revision of the manual? :)

Anyway, the entire paragraph titled "Wi-Fi procedure with Android" doesn't mention the terms "Chromecast", "built-in" or "Googlecast" even once. Nor does it mention that this input won't be available if you omit these steps.

Since I am not even interested in home automation, I admit, I didn't read it word by word.

Indeed, you are right and obviously I was simply too stupid to know that Google Home is mandatory for initially setting up a Chromecast receiver device.

After doing a factory reset, my phone detected the 1120 and asked me if I wanted to set it up as a Chromecast device. Yes, I do (I don't remember having seen this in my first setup attempt). Only when I was redirected to Play Store to install Google Home, some past memory stroke me ...

I bought an Onkyo R-N855 about two years ago and yes, back then I did install Google Home. However, since I'm not really interested all this home automation stuff, I later uninstalled the app. The Onkyo R-N855 continued working with Chromecast (it never worked particularly smooth), so I completely forgot about this.

Now, on to new adventures. I never really figured, if and how Chromecast still works with ethernet connection, only. I'll probably find out. :p

One thing I can say for sure - leaving all this devilish black streaming magic aside: I really love the phono MM input. Extremely quiet. Extremely detailed. Extremely neutral. Those running multi-k bucks valve pre-amps won't take me seriously anyway, because so far I was more than happy with the build-in phono pre on my (heavily pimped) Quad 34. But I do feel that the 1120 does in fact better this.

Chromecast does work with Ethernet connection, looks and functions exactly the same as when on WiFi.

Here are my first impressions, I have had the 1120 for a couple of days now and really like it so far. I am using the amp purely for streaming music from either Tidal or spotify.

My room size: The speakers are in my relatively large family open plan area (sofa, dining table and chairs etc) and sit quite near the wall.
Speakers: Kef Q500
Sources: Tidal Hifi and Spotify Premium with the amp connected via ethernet. Streaming via chromecast.

Appearance - Small, subtle and minimalist. Perfect for a one box solution to sit on a shelf on it's own.

Usability - Extremely easy to set up including room perfect. The app is simple and works really well to do quick adjustments of the main settings. I mainly use the Tidal app or I use my google assistant to directly launch a song via spotify e.g. 'hey google, play X on speakers'. Currently I don't feel that I need a remote at all, everything can be done by voice commend (google assistance) or using the streaming service apps.

Sound quality - Room perfect makes a significant difference, clarity and detail improves with the main difference for me being an improvement in vocals. With RP on vocals are lifted out from the rest of the music and become more clear and even sound louder. In the past there were a few songs where I felt that that the vocals were mixed in with the rest of the music more than I would have liked, it's not the case with this amp and RP. There is a huge difference when listening to Tidal Hifi compared to Spotify premium, I really would love to try Tidal MQA but not been able to have a way to stream that yet. My speakers lack bass and I think I need to add a sub to have a more complete sound. Was listening to music practically all day yesterday and even to the same songs multiple times without getting bored or tired. I am really impressed with the sound quality in terms clarity and the vocal performance.

WAF - my wife loves it and my children can also use it by giving the command via google assistance I have at home.

Look forward to hearing what others think of it.

P.S: VaVa - Life's a struggle - such an epic listening experience through this amp.
Very interesting. I’ve got no experience with Dirac, which is used by NAD, and Room Perfect, which Lyngdorf uses. I know you don’t need no extra hardware like a Mini DSP for instance, with Rew software on a computer. So Lyngdorf is very intriguing as it’s easy to operate everything from the app, though I would like it that a remote was included. I know this can be bought separately for around 80-dollars, but still. But my main question how was the soundstage before Room Perfect, and the voicing feature? Did you find the sound too neutral before Room Perfect etc.

Yes, the switch to ethernet was smooth and troublefree. The manual and most other sources don't go into much detail here. Everyone seems to assume that nobody's using a cable connection anymore.

From a network point of view anything else would have been a surprise. Being "on the same network" is not related to the media used to connect to it. There's no peer-to-peer connection from the mobile device to the Chromecast receiver, all traffic goes through the router (and the receiver pulls the desired contents from wherever it might be located on the Internet or the local network).

Still, there is some amount of wrong advice floating around. When trouble with casting is mentioned, I have more than once read replies stating that all devices had to be on the same wireless SSID ...

There is one thing currently not working for me and that's saving vTuner presets.

I have a station playing, select any (empty, they all are) save-position and hit the Save button. After a second or two a message is displayed: "Successfully saved radio station as preset". However, the pull-down menu switches to position 10, displaying a value of "null". No preset is stored.

I've tried this with Firefox, Chrome and Edge (Chromium based) on Windows and Chrome on Android. Disabling add-ons did not change a thing. Looks like a small bug.

However, by now I'm no longer sure that this ...

Initial firmware seems to have a small bug when the amp is fed through Roon (at least on iPadOS). Volume levels are limited. The control needs to be cranked up all the way for realistic levels. Should be easy to fix.

... is really a bug (as suspected by the dealer). Volume control covers an extremely wide range and allows for ridiculously precise adjustment on the 1120 (which also means its not very sensitive to the app control). If the volume control is a simple digital one, taking @stjernholm's word for it, it would make sense to not allow for too much unused overhead of the volume setting. If you want it really loud, crank it up fully.

Well ... firmware is still the same (v1.1.6), but saving vTuner presets started working for me magically.

Maybe some issue with the service provided by vTuner? I did click the entry "Get Access Code" immediately before trying to perform the save procedure. No clue if this had anything to do with it ...

The amp keeps amazing me. This might sound like an old ad, but there is really so much to discover in my music collection, LP and ripped CDs ..

Has anyone had the chance to audition the 1120 against a Uniti Atom, either at home or in store? I'd love to know how the two stack up purely in terms of sound quality.

We have our demonstration 1120 paired with the Lyngdorf MH3/BW3 speakers and boundary woofer.

This is our new favourite system in our showroom. We also have the Steinway Model O system running in the same room.

That system must sound amazing!

I'm really interested to hear what you think about the BW3 with the 1120, does it add any benefit using Lyngdorf sub with the Lyngdorf amp?

The SL system is awesome for sure.
Yes adding a boundary woofer with the MH3’s transforms the system.
We are big believers in sub sat systems as all can be place perfectly for the best in room response. We have 5 systems currently on demonstration and all are sub sat. The Model S is 2.0 but we also have the LSR212 boundary woofers for this too.

Does that setup require stereo BW-3 subs?

I've been debating a 1120 (or Atom) paired with Kef R3 speakers, but those Lyngdorf speakers + sub would be an interesting alternative.

We are running a single BW3.
You are welcome to visit us for a listen.

Yes, I have, not at home but in store.

But honestly, I'm not sure how much can be learnt from this. The 1120 was running without RoomPerfect, the Atom doesn't have any room correction anyway. Fed through Roon (with Tidal/Qobuz) the Atom did sound a bit "sweeter" or "more colourful", where the Lyngorf was a tad more neutral.

But so what? Below 200 Hz sound is predominantly influenced by the room and due to masking effects this can influence other frequency ranges ans specifically voices quite a bit. Based on what difference RoomPerfect does make in my own room (the sound is less distracting, offering more details and more pleasant all at the same time) I am sure that the difference I had heard in the demonstration room was absolutely neglectable. If anything, it's a matter of personal taste. But the Lyngdorf offers so many options to tune this to your own likings (even for every single input) plus it has a lot more power to drive even inefficient or critical peakers ...

Thanks, and that's a good point about the EQ options available with the 1120. It's definitely one for my short-list.

Good room correction is essential for good sound reproduction. RoomPerfect is one of the best if not the best. The 1120 is not only fairly unique but has RoomPerfect to boot.

We have 4 systems running room perfect and one system running Trinnov TEQ.

We are also a specialist acoustic room treatment company and are aware of the benefits RoomPerfect brings.

Rich, based on your experience with the 1120 to date, how well do you feel it would pair with the ELAC Navis ARB-51 active standmounts?

I’m in the market for both new speakers and a new amp and this is the current pairing I’m leaning towards.

I feel it would pair exceptionally well.
We have the Lyngdorf 2170 paired with active M&K 2520P studio monitors and it is a formidable combination.

We have recently taken on ELAC as a brand of speakers.

You are most welcome to visit our showrooms to hear the TDAI1120/Lyngdorf MH3/BW3 and the TDAI 2170 with the M&K actives. Unfortunately we will not have the ELAC on demonstration.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions further question by pm or email.

You should see a comparative review between the Lyngdorf TDAi1120 and Naim Atom at The.Ear.net very soon that I'd suggest you wait for.

There was a third amp included in the shoot out but it has been unreliable so has been withdrawn.

Thanks. Do you know when this comparison is expected to be uploaded? Next few days, or, not for a few weeks?

I’ve been reading everything I can about the Elacs recently.

Everyone everywhere loves them. I have to hear a pair.

If I had five grand, it’d be;

The Elacs.
The 1120.
Two SVS 1000 sealed subs.

Who could need anything else?

Or use the 1120's power amp and step up to a pair of Velas for the same price :) It would be interesting to demo both side-by-side and see whether adding the amps to the Navis brought them up to the quality of the Vela.

Good point sir. The ribbon tweeter is thing of mine after all my Adams.

But a six driver, six power amp active three way will take some beating.

It would be a fascinating comparison.
