How about the Samsung LE52A559. You are not going to get many cheap 52" LCD's, you will be looking around the £1000+ mark for this Samsung.

To be honest at that size you would be better with a plasma. They are cheaper and far better for the size you want.

I would try looking for the Panasonic 50PZ80, good value large screen. I think some people have managed to get them for around the £1000 mark.

Though I think anyone would be lucky to get 8 years out of a television with the prices they're built to these days.

think about it

On average, most consumers of today upgrade every 3-5 years for various of reason, but mainly due to the advancements in tech. So there really isnt point in using hi-grade components. It also helps to keep the cost down significantly, which makes it even easier.

For example, I upgrade my PC every 2-3 years, my Cell 1-1.5 years, TV 3-4 years, DMP every 1-1.5 years etc...

Even sony???

thanks in advance

I don't see why a tv won't last, most tv's have a life expectancy of between 60,000 to 100,000 hours. Even if you had it on 10 hours a day, every day of the year that's only 3,650 hours so do the maths.

Its more a question of whether you would still want the same tv in 8 years time? I bought my Sony 32" CRT about 4-5 years ago and it looks so dated and big that I just had to change it. Nothing wrong with it but size and technology have moved on and prices have fell.

A top LCD/plasma in 8 years time will be far superior to anything on sale now.

If I were you I would buy a plasma and, if possible, buy from somewhere like John Lewis because of the 5 year warranty.

For the size you want I would go for plasma which Sony don't sell. Pioneer plasma is the best but very expensive. Panasonic are excellent and would be my choice if I were you. Bear in mind you will need to be sitting quite far back if you are buying a 50+ inch tv otherwise the picture will not look so good.

That's a meaning figure cos a TV is not made up for a single component.

If you are after the best SD / dvd image then the Pioneer 8G pdpsx5080 can be had for £1000 ( richer sounds have around lot of OB ones littered about the company ) and is the best set for the price range *by a long way regardless of it not being 1080p*

If you really have to have 1080p then the next best choice is the Panasonic TH50PZ80 plasma available for £1000 ish.l.

If you dont mind spending a little bit more on what is the arguably the best 50" panel ( besides pioneers own KRP panel ) then check out the PDPLX5090 for a patch over £1700.... also 1080p. This set is mind blowing btw... the SD and HD quality are utterly jaw dropping and it is worth every single penny.

Personally I think LCDs dont come close to any of these panels btw.
