Could the Dell Vostro 1000 be used as a desktop replacement do you reckon or is the screen/res the killer?

They are both pretty good, it is a shame that the Acer have not got a bigger hard drive, 80GB even on a Laptop is not a lot these days.
I have an Acer Aspire 5633, it is a great machine, more than what you want to pay, but I expect the Acer you are looking at have a lot of the build quality as my Acer. The screen is great, nice and clear. I have not had a problem with it, well not hardware anyway.

Used a Dell once, was not that impressed, considering that it had the same specs as my laptop, it seemed to be slower.

at the end of the day it is your choice.

Have a look at the Lenovo 3000 Series.

The N100 model comes in around £400 and build quality is ahead of the Dell and Acer IMO

    http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=4K3D

similar spec to the Acer and Dell but with an Intel core Duo, bluetooth and fingerprint security
