Pretty good timing as BBC dramatized the last days of the Wilson government not two weeks ago focussing mainly on his resignation honours which appeared to have been drawn up by his secretary Marcia Williams honouring people that had helped her out financially and career wise. She also promoted herself to Lady Falkender and was known to Private Eye as Lady Forkbender.

It's all going horribly wrong for Labour, isn't it ?

"Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell has been excluded from Cabinet talks on Iran since 2003 due to her husband's business dealings, it has emerged. Following a Sunday Mirror report, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport confirmed Ms Jowell did not have access to confidential documents on Iran.

This was after David Mills allegedly tried to use his wife's position to sell passenger jets to Iran in 2003."

What was it that Labour used to say about "sleaze" ?

Sorry to interupt the Tory party conference your having, but Sleaze is by no means an exclusive labour problem, and they also weren't the first party to condemn it and then go on to be embroiled in it! are you all going to Profumo funeral? if so you might sit next to the Hamiltions or Tim yeo or Jonathan Aitken or Paddy pants down, or Jerremy thorpe, and on and on and on and on!

Err, where did I say I was a Tory supporter ?

When did I say it was ? The Labour party were quite quick to condemn the last government for it, though.

No, I'm not, are you ?

Strange that you failed to mention any Labour "sleazers", from the past or present. Are we to assume from this that you are a Tony Blair fan boy ? Looks that way

The ever righteous Tony Blair and his New Labour party got to power on the back of their lily white image having made such a thing about sleaze in John Major's government yet he now seems to be running out of untainted MP's to promote to the front benches.

Actually they didn't. Check Hansard. It was the press who made a big deal out of it. Blair promised to introduce all sorts of measures, which they did (and then promptly watered down) but the attacks made, were only those that the Tories themselves did, and are doing again. Which, in fairness is their job as opposition.

The Tories are also just as guilty of handing out honours for favours. In fact whole tracts of legislation for favours...........

The whole lot of em' make me sick.

Cash for questions, cash for titles... it's the enevitable consiquence of personality politics and the rise of the mass media influence. The ultimate example of which is America, where a candidate needs a 'war chest' running into hundreds of millions in order to get elected as anything. Parties need to spend vast amounts of cash on marketing themselves, which plays into the hands of an influencial few.

The press.... AKA Murdoch, who (at the time) was endorsing the Labour Party. No surprise there, then.

Now, back to sleaze, would anyone like to tell me why a minister earning in excess of £120,000 a year needs 5 mortgages on the same house ?

Murdoch was only endorsing the Labour party in the run-up to the 97' election when he was absolutely sure they would win. The Tories sleaze scandels had been rolling on during the 80s and early to mid 90's when he was still 100% behind them. Besides that still left the Mail, Express, Toryograph, and the ill named 'Independent' as non Murdoch, Tory papers who hated Labours, new or otherwise, guts.

I have no idea Nick. Apparently they never discussed it.........;) :D
