tis old news. But all they've done is:
made colour screens standard for full sized iPods,
    dropped 'Photo' for 'Colour' instead,
got rid of 30gb option, leaving 20 + 60gb choices.

Batt life is kept at 15 hrs. No great loss unless you've just bought a monochrome screen one........

This is NOT the 5th gen - more a stop gap to keep people happy. Apple have said so themselves. :)

Any ideas when the 5th gen will be out? It seems like ages since the 4th gen was out!

Your 20GB 4G monochrome is the last of it's kind. As per above responses, Apple dropped monochrome displays from all iPod (full size) and made the range a 20 and 60GB white iPod, and 20GB U2 Ltd Edition with colour displays.
They still retain the 4G look, since the display change and podcasts, with the recent updater were released, was all that happened.
5G versions are likely to have some limited playback of movie trailers, given the way Quicktime has been positioned and tied in with iTunes for that purpose.

I have a 40 gig white monochrome ipod with click wheel. It says copyright 2004 on the back. Is it 3G or 4G?

dood - 4G. 3G was the touch sensitive buttons beneath the screen.

geewhiz - nothing. It's purely a naming thing. Apple decide for whatever reason that photo was too limited or restrictive, so dropped it and changed to colour.

Exactly. The new iTunes with podcasts support is one step away from video iPods.........

But normally they have had an upgrade a year. It's been a lot longer since the last one.
