Isn't the new iPod touch the most desirable bit of kit you ever saw? Complete with a web browser and Wi-Fi access, from £199. Like the iPhone but without the phone.

I expect Apple will sell at least a trillion of these, and dominate the market for personal music players even more than they have done so far.

It has been discussed towards the end of this thread. The one big major downside of it for many is the lack of decent capacity at only 16GBs. Looks like the HDD is being slowly replaced by flash drives in portable music/video players.

Yes, I suppose that is a better place for it. I was just so overcome with the sheer technological beauty of the thing I wasn't thinking straight :)

I agree its a class piece of kit. The fact that both US and UK websites keep crashing and are very slow to respond shows how much interest there is in it. I think this features guide is the most impressive when showing browsing by album art. I've just ordered an iPod Classic as the 80GB model is quite good value for money at £159, but if the Touch was bigger in capacity, it'd certainly be worth the extra layout.

I have the 60GB model but only really use an 8GB nano these days. This is mainly for the Nike+ add-on kit for running, but I find it more than enough capacity for me - provided I use it as a music player, and the laptop as the main music storage device.

Ha ha....16gb storage for a video player, not a chance.

I was quite fed up as I'd only just brought a 80 gb iPod but I cheered up when I found out it was only 16 GB.

Well there is a new 160 GB model for those that want very high volume storage. But also an alternative path for those that can regularly sync with a desktop/laptop, and who want a thinner, lighter device with built-in wi-fi and browsing. You can still hold around 150-175 albums on a 16GB iPod, and that is far more choice than I've ever needed for a single trip. It is also pretty easy to change what is put on the iPod each time you sync.

I see Seagate have announced a 1.8" drive that holds 120GB.

Although it is a bit big for the likes of the iPod Touch, surely the 1.0" HDDs that the company makes (that used to be in iPod Mini's) will soon be able to hold enough capacity to make them viable alternatives for video devices.

As has been said, 16GB is not much these days.

Yeah, its an outstanding piece of kit. Too bad the storage is the achilles heel.

You can bet they'll update it in the future with a built in hard drive. Look at the original iPod.....released 5 years ago with a 5GB HDD. 5 years later, the iPod is thinner, and capable of holding 160GB.

I'm getting one . I was going to wait for the iphone but I'll be getting a razr2 and one of these. I want the wifi capability for mobile surfing more than anything (PDAs suck). Only down side is I don't like safari very much.

I very much doubt it. They would have done that from day one if they were going to. Many people seem to be stuck in the 'more storage is better' mindset, without considering alternative ways of using these devices.

How many people really need to carry more than 175 albums of music around with them, or want to save stuff they've seen on YouTube?

i think they will release one with a bigger hard drive a year down the line, but i can't wait that long, gonna get one in a few months (mates going America).
Eveytime they have released an ipod they have managed to release one with a bigger hard drive in a smaller case a year or so later

when is it released in the UK?

Why I'm buying....

I've had most iPod's over the years. Slowly upgrading the HD size etc. Every time a new higher capacity came out I bought it and filled it with junk.

When I sat back and honestly looked at my albums on my last iPod I can honestly say there are probably 20 that I listen to with any regularity. I was uploading music to my iPod for the sake of it.

16GB more than covers that.

I used my last iPod with the camera connector to hook up to my Canon digital camera when the family went on our 3 week holiday last year. I shot going on 1000 pictures and videos. Total usage - 11GB

16GB more than covers that too.

I never watch video on my iPods.

I use my iPod at home mainly when I'm on the sunbed. As the Touch has Wi-Fi capability I will stream all my iTunes music (some 80 odd gigs worth) via Wi-Fi straight to my touch using the dottunes software if there is something I haven't already uploaded to the flash memory. I can also use dottunes when I'm out and about via Wi-Fi should I need to (not that I expect to).

I'll fill my Touch with my favourites, and rely on dottunes for everything else from my main library.

What else...

Well I love to browse the web when I get home from work late at night. I can now use the Touch upstairs in bed, without my wife asking me "when are you coming up to bed" etc. Again, I can dottunes any music/video/pictures from my main pc downstairs should I wish to. I can check my email around the house easily instead of getting up and going into the "computer room". I can mess about with YouTube, read the paper, listen to my music all on one application "easily".

So why am I not buying an iPhone to have everything. Well the iPhone doesn't have everything. My o2 XDA Orbit has GPS satnav in a smaller case. It also takes care of web on the move via GPRS if I so desire - I don't to be honest but the satnav is the biggest selling point of the XDA.

I like to keep my iPod seperate to my phone. My iPods have always been meticulously looked after. They don't go outside (apart from the annual family holiday when they are used as back-ups for photo's etc) and are cherished from purchase until I sell them.

I'll do the same with my touch. It will be immaculate when I come to sell it, as my 5.5 iPod "classic" video was.

I've got £20 off the purchase price with the discount code and the funds from the sale of my video iPod. The touch will cost me very little to "upgrade".

So for me - the purchase was easy. An iPod with a big screen, ultra thin with Safari web browser and all my music streamed via Wi-Fi. I'm honestly not bothered about the fact it's "only" 16GB. With Wi-Fi and dottunes my iPod touch is 500GB - the same as my iMac.

Roll on the 28th....

One of the biggest attractions of an MP3 player for me is the ability to have all my music with me at all times. Smaller capacity flash players are OK for specialist tasks like jogging but I wouldn't want my main player to be limited by storage capacity to 16 gigs.

Aside from the space limitation (especially bad when you consider that this device is aimed at video) is the fact that your options for video playback and third party software are limited.

If this thing played DiVX files I would be seriously tempted even with the storage limitations but it won't. There's also little chance of really innovative 3rd party apps since Apple won't make an API available for developers.

It's a real shame as the physical design and UI is spot on. Maybe future hardware and firmware releases will address these drawbacks.

looks nice, but wonder how long that touch screen ll last, will be filthy after a few weeks. will wait a few months to see how reliable it is; most peple i know have had ipods fail on them just after 1 year, irivers seem to last much longer. Really annoying Apple cant sort out one device iphone/itouch with larger capacity and 3g, which should have been included from the start.

most of my friends that have mp3 players have ipods, only one has a zen, and none of them broke, people simply upgraded, my first ipod lasted me 3 years before i upgraded to the video

is youtube on ipod touch (and iphone) the same as using youtube on the web.

what i mean is is it only a limited selective videos specially converted to apples format?
or is the whole youtube library like if i use a comp?

Does anyone know when the iPod touch will be available in apple stores to demo and can you pre-order from an apple store?

Cheers
