Heres the story, when i press the power button i get absolutely nothing. I have all switch buttons in correctly and all power cables. Is there anyway i can find out further what is wrong with the system?

I have an old 500w psu with 20 pin 4pin mobo connections, i have the mobo to go with it (a8n-sli premium) that im using at the minute which i can use for testing components.

What should i test and how?

Thanks Kev

If I'm understanding you then you are using the 500W to power the i7 build yea? If that's right then chances are the 580W is dead and should probably be RMA'd.

I cant use the 500W psu to power the mobo can I? It only has a 20pin mobo connector and a 4pin cpu connector.

The x58 mobo has 24pin mobo and 8pin cpu.

have you put the correct 2x 4pins in the motherboard and not the pci-e ones?

you should get somethin comin on like fans or lights, the only way i can think of to test it is to unplug everything and then just connect the motherboard 24 pin and the 2x4pins and the gfx power and turn it on, if its doin anythin it will boot to bios, from there you can add things 1 at a time to see if somethin is stoppin it.

at the moment there is nothing plugged into the mobo except the 8pin 12v the 20+4pin main motherboard supply. Should i get a light on the mobo to say if the psu is working, if not how can i tell if my psu needs to be replaced?

I have a spare motherboard as mentioned above with a 4pin 12v mobo supply, can i use my 580W hiper supply with the 8pin 12v in it?

if you have the cpu fan connected it should power on when you start it up

how are you trying to start it up? are you shortin the power pins or have you connected the power wire and using the start button?

it is turned on at the back of the psu yeah??

if its all turned on and still nothin then u cud try the 500w with 1 x 4pin in just to prove its the psu, again just the minimum req to power up

before id say that i would remove everything and then double check as you put them back in the m/b other than that as you cant really check anythin else i would recommend gettin it all checkd out

Put it back 2gether and then put in a USB cable into the back of the mobo which lights up on my other of when powered down. It did not light up with my x58 mobo. Dead me thinks?

Is it possible to be the 12v 8pin supply on the psu is broken? The other mobo worked with the 4pin one (which comes off the 8pin).

Thanks for your help Boon72 and Streety
