I have wanted the house of flying daggers from cd-wow but all reviews say pic quality is very poor.
cd-wow are now advertising another copy with slightly different cover for about £2 more, and wonder if anyone knows if its the same version?
    The link is here

I can't comment on the quality of the copy available from cdwow, but I've just got back from the cinema where I watched this and can highly recommend this to anyone who also enjoyed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero.

Just as beautiful to look at and the traditional Chinese instruments in the soundtrack are a wonderful added dimension to the film.

    In one word. Fabulous.

Same here sick boy. As far as I can tell from just looking, is the DVD is 6.1 instead of 5.1 & a disc full of extras which are probably useless since they wont be subtitled

That's certainly what all the reviews I've read have pointed to as well.

I've have had the Daggers Edko version for a while now, and I think it has an excellent picture quality. I also think that Daggers is better than Hero.

For members who don't know, Andy Lau is a huge film (over 120 films so far) and song artist (loads of albums) veteran in HK (292 awards!!!) and at 44 years old he's going very strong.

Takeshi Kaneshiro (3/4 Taiwanese and 1/4 Japanese and speaks Mandarin, Japanese, Cantonese, English, Taiwanese) is a huge star in Asia (mainly films) and they used his face and body to create The character Samanosuke in the PS2 game Onimusha (but also spokesperson for Prada and SonyEricsson).

OK so how can you guarantee that you get the EDKO version? Is it a case that any R3 will be the EDKO version? Most etailers don't give that sort of info on their DVDS
There is a lot of debate about HOFD v Hero (which I loved) - I'd like to make my own mind up!

    PaulBoy,

The R3 versions of Hero and HOFD from CD-Wow are the EDKO versions,I have them both and they are probably the best compromise you can get for sound and picture quality at a good price.

    Hi

Has anyone heard the 6.1 mix over the 1disc 5.1 mix yet?

Dvd Beaver and Dvd Rewind have no details on this new 2 disc set and as yet I haven't got round to watching the first one. If the 6.1 is miles ahead I might wait but what do you guys think?

Also has anyone got the Shalion Soccer r3 yet? That is one funny film with some wicked sfx.

    Cheers

no offence to you lot as you are all sound, but i thought the picture on the edko copy of my house of flying daggers was really poor. Lots of blocking and washed out colours, very good soundtrack though, and awesome film !.
Just wish the dvd was better quality

Cebs uk,I have HOFD with the 6.1 - worth waiting for IMO.

Stanleh,Agree with you re. the picture, but as I mentioned
in my previous post at moment the region 3 is best compromise
for sound and picture at a decent price.

the 2 disk hero i got a year or so ago is edko and i thought the pic/sound quality was very good.unless my memory isnt that good!

i was put off buying the first version that came out a few months back, hofd, for £7.99 because of a few mixed reactions to pic quality. was that version edko and is this new one edko too?

as for the extras i quite like watching these on region 3 disks, ok there are no subs but to be honest they are good onset features that are better than most of the ones we get when they just show clips of the film with a few interviews, and once ive watched them once i rarely look again, also this is £9.99 which seems pretty good.

Is anyone else utterly confused at the rave reviews that this film is getting? I went to see it with a few friends a couple of days ago, and although I loved Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero, I thought this was absolutely dreadful; rediculous plot, and the longest 2 hour film in existence. By the time it finally ended, I felt like I'd been in the theatre for a week! Sure, the scenery was great, and a few of the fights were solid, but the film itself seemed like a huge mess. None of my mates liked it either. In fact, near the end, in what was supposed to be a very touching scene, the cinema audience was laughing out loud.

I definitely wouldn't recommend this film, but I'm obviously in the minority as the reviews are almost entirely positive.

I did the review for this site, and I loved it. A huge mess? Far from it, one of my favourite Asian movies :)

I watched my Edko 2 disc versions of Hero and HOFD again recently on my PW6 and my good old Loewe 32"CRT.I really can't fault these films for picture or sound quality at the price you can pick them up.

I would say Hero has the better picture quality,HOFD has a very high contrast picture and sound wise both have DTS 6.1 ES and are very good
(I'm surprised someone hasn't commented on Hero being 'only' ES matrix where as HOFD is ES Discrete! ;) ).

I think sometimes we can end up nit picking a little too much - but I admit I do it as much as the next Home Cinema buff.

just got the 2 disc edko 6.1 version and it does put the 1st release(and the thai version) to shame i wouldnt say the picture quality is a excellent as the edko version of hero but it is comparable(quite soft in parts and quite a bit of compression and noise, though i am watching it via projector!) bearing in mind that hofd is intentionally very high contrast and washed out throughout and the nasty 100hz type video thing that was present on the 1st release is also gone(thank god!)
the same thing happened with hero, edko relesed a sloppy 1 disc version them a few months later the 2 disc near hdtv quality one appeared iirc they do this to try and fend off the bootleggers in china so they at least get a few $$$'s away from the bootleggers they also did it with bulletproof monk and around the world in 80 days basically any movie with jet li jackie chan any of the big names!

Just got my copy (EDKO) in the post this morning from CDWow. Sadly it's going back :( . Massive picture and sound break up through all of chapters 8-11, and the DTS piano intro. Noticed that CDWow had a brief break while they appeared to be getting new stock, so hope it's not a problem with this batch but just my copy. Certainly wont be happy if the replacement does the same (as it did when they replaced a duff copy of Basic a while back).

The PQ on Hero is really quite good :) But the PQ on HOFD is really very poor, very grainy and washed out :( . The audio on both discs is excellent however :smashin: Didnt like HOFD as much as Hero and neither as much as CTHD :D
