New House, New Front Room

Hello Everyone,

I've been reading through this forums for years, so thought I would post my own thread seen as I finally got the chance!!

So here's my story, I am a 23 year old Electrician who wanted to buy a house, not likely with the economy the way it is, So I decided to take a job working in Afghanistan on military bases (as an Electrician). So nearly one year later I managed to buy a house.

I get 3 weeks holiday everytime I come home so decided to totally empty the front room and hopefully make it look nice, compared to the 12th Century decor that was there when we got the keys.

I'll try and upload the pics as fast as I can, I'm back in the Ghan now so as you can imagine the internet isnt the greatest, hope you all like my attempt at my own little project.

Here's what toys I bought for myself:

Toshiba Regza 55" LED TV
KEF KHT 1505 Speakers
Yamaha RX-V871
Sky+ HD
PS3

Pics to follow.

Ok, so a little insight to what my plans were.

Rip the firplace out as me and the Mrs didnt really want a fire and just have a recess in the wall with some lights in.

The wall connected to next door would be built out a extra 100mm and be insulated with styrex (mr brother works in cladding so didnt have to pay for this, hence the choice :) and then sound proof plasterboard on top before plastering, also the recess in the fireplace will be boarded out with soundproof plasterboards as well.

I didnt want the neighbours complaining all the time about the surround sound!

We ripped the cieling down so I could re-wire it without messing upstairs about, and it needed re-skimming anyway.

I would wire the speaker points in 1mm 2 core flex and each speaker point will have its own arcitrave box.

The tv will be going on the wall on the right as soon as you walk in the room, and then all the equipment will be on the right side of the window on the left of the chimney breast.

I will run 3 HDMI leads to the TV and 2 co-ax's and 4 cat5e cables, just incase really as I will only be using the one HDMI for the time being.

So there is all my hard work, with help from family of course, I am really tempted by a projector but the Mrs. really isnt keen on the idea, when i get home she best not leave me in the house for too long alone otherwise I'll have one up lol

looks great Paul. is it a different room renovated each time you're back.
Unusual not to have chairs facing the windows.
nice colour scheme.

that was the original plan but after doing the front room its put me right off. Its only the kitcehn that needs doing now, were gonna pick what needs doing, colours, cupboards etc then were off on holiday lol

I wanted the front room to be different, ive seen too many tv's on chimney breasts etc, plus I really liked the couch and it was the only way it would practically fit, only problem is the reflection off the tele, but it isnt too bad, we had a blackout blind made off blindstogo.co.uk and its really nice, same colour as the feature wall.

there's a pic of the blind, didnt realise I had one lol, it was only fitted the other day, roll on the 9th August when i can try the couch, I was over here when it got fitted!

That looks great Paul, good that 3 weeks gives you just enough time to make a decent job of it. I'm like you but work in Iraq, get 3 weeks off at a time and it's great to see improvements in the house, just a shame the only way to make a decent living is to work in a sh*thole!

Cheers

Mat

Sorry for the late reply, been changing bases and had no internet access!

The cabinet is from Ikea, cant remember the name of it but it's like a mix and match range, you pick your unit, cupboards etc from different ranges.

Are you an electrician Mat, if so what company you work for, the company here treats us shockingly and been looking for something else.

Thanks for all the nice comments!
