I have an alcove in a wall which is to house the new hifi unit. The wall is solid block. I was going to build a unit that I could pull out to get to the back but I'm worried about the sonic and aesthetic effects of coasters! So, while reading hifi news last night I hit an idea. How about fix MDF shleves to the wall on one of those adjustable shelf systems and build a false cabinet around it that can easilly be lifted away to give me side access to the gear and cabling?

Sounds good but I'm wondering where I could get a shelf system strong enough to hold a heavy power amp. Any ideas?

If you use 3 or 4 vertical tracks rather than the standard 2 you should be able to inrease the maximum load and stability of the shelf. Maybe battens along the wall as well if necessary.

Yeah, any idea where I can get such a system? I don't think battens will be neccessary as it's a new block wall (not lite blocks) so some heavy steel rawl fixings will be fine. I would probably put a safety bar at the front just in case.

I'm guessing you can get hifi versions of such a system but it's likely to be 10 times the price of a standard office one. The idea of having each unit isolated from the floor and each other is appealing.
