    Hello

Complete newbie here and need some advice please. We were burgled back in feb and the night vision on the cctv meant that we couldn't see the number plate of the scummy so and so's that made away with all of our stuff. Because the police are a bit busy doing other stuff, I need to do as much of the leg work as possible for them so I need to find out, is it possible for a filter or something to be put over the top of the image in order to try and get any of the numberplate?

    Many thanks

    Nicole

Welcome to the forum nicolenlolly :hiya:

Enhancing the CCTV footage really depends on how good or bad it is to start with. You can't add detail that was not recorded in the first place.

What you could try is loading the footage into a video editing program and seeing if you can enhance the picture to be brighter etc. to try and make out more detail such as the number plate.
Or try one of the forensic video tools, some of which are likely to be expensive while others may be free. I found this one with a quick search that states it is free and may do what you want - VideoCleaner FREE forensic video enhancement software - download

Make a copy of yr footage before you do anything . . . that way if the PC should crash, or you press the wrong Key, you still have a clean copy of the original. However, as MarkE19 says, you can't retrieve details that isn't there; -although some algorithms may be able to "interpolate" - and just increasing Contrast may help you see more clearly . . . . If you know the make/Model of the car you might be able to spot it ( or one close?) in daylight footage esp it they live nearby, or consider your area to be worthwhile. Then you can compare NoPlate / car-characteristics, etc. - as you probably already know. However, I'd suspect the Police do know who likely did it; but with poor footage an arrest just won't "stick",
For future greater protection maybe you need to increase the IR lighting, although that will only give a monochrome image - of course there is no G'tee the car was fitted with genuine NoPlates . . . oh dear.

    Good Luck.
