From Harman Kardon UK:
Does any one know the specs for the 5550 & 4550, there is no info on the UK Harmon Kardon site yet.
Look on the Harman/Kardon international site. They have different names but they are there. AVR525 I think is the 5500.
Just had a look at the US site, hopefully the 4550 will be the same as the 325 and the 5550 the same as the 525.
If so, that means that the new receivers will have full 7 channel amplification.
The 5550 is a 7ch receiver with 7x75 watt power output (this will be much more in practice). There is one power transformer for the front 2 channels and another for the rest. This should afford superior 2ch performance, whilst retaining h/k's high current design (the older 5500 didn't need separate power supplies as it had only 5ch of power).
The Hifi-Choice (one of the best mags available IMO) review gave the 5550 a 5/5 rating and commented that "...this is a feature packed, powerful sounding AV receiver, and one of the few around the price that ain't too sloppy on music as well."
I only heard the 5500 in Sevenoaks and was impressed, so if the 5550 gets 5 stars then I was right to wait for the 5550 (as I'm after something that'll last a while and will be good for stereo as well as 5/6/7.1 HT.
Russraff, I've got the 2003 HK brochure (with the 4550 and 5550 in it) - the 8500 looks like a wicked amp!
If anyone wants specific info quoted from the HK 2003 brochure, let me know...
Another thing as well, the 5550 kicks out 45Amps and the 4550 35Amps. How does that compare to other receivers out there? (Sony, Denon, Yamaha etc....)
The 8500 is truly great, possibly because of the power supply is the size of Bristol!.
I demoed this against an A1SR, AZ1 and Marantz 9200. To be frank, I preferred the h/k by some margin to those that I listened to.
Where would be the best place to pre order (5550), could we get a group buy together and save a few £s?
I'd be up for that for sure!
FYI - the 5550 is 7x85Watts @45Amps
