I see Currys website has a new Grundig DVD recorder just under the £200 barrier. Not too many details, presumably it is a DVD +RW recorder.

Not actually a clone of a Sampo model, rather a Mustek one.

Mustek and Sampo recorders are both based upon the Cirrus Logics chipset, but there the similarity ends :)

I believe an upcoming Sampo model will share the same processing board.

    I bought one from Currys and these are my observations;

NOISY !! the machine uses a fan which makes a constant loud hum!

The on screen menus are basic but functional.

The remote control is a design nightmare and the recorder does not respond well to it.

Internally the transporter is a Ricoh unit (without it's casing).
Yes, the same unit Currys sell as an internal DVD + RW for £99.

The processing board can be seen here: http://www.area450.com/thesampozone/players/md40597.htm

Picture and sound quality id VERY good.
I've tried recording in all quality modes and from all sources and I have no complaints there.

I purchased it once I was able to discover who makes it and whether it is a hackable unit.
    Region hack is:
    1) Empty tray closed.
    2) from the remote press 'Stop' and 00001 (region 1) or 00002 (region 2) etc. use 00000 for all regions.

I hope the above is useful.

The Sampo will use the CS98201 Cirrus Logics chipset (so new it's not even featured on their site), I suspect the Grundig uses the older CS98200.

Are you hooked up to an AV amplifier by the digital output by the way ? Another person raised a query about it at the DVDR Help Forums - it seems the Grundig is missing the all important Audio menu to enable the person to select the right audio output method (ie analogue vs digital).

The Sampo DVE-R3 will be released in the UK just as soon as the UK distributors find a reseller - anyone loaded on here who wants to sell them ?!

I can confirm that the Grundig uses the Cirrus Logic CS98201 chip.
I can also confirm the lack of audio control menu.
I have it connected to a Yamaha amp via digital coax and all is well.
I have also tried the optical out and again all is well.

    Picture quality is excellent.

I have however, taken out the fan.
This does mean that the unit runs a little too hot (because of a hot running power supply) So I also incased the transport unit (to protect the drive from excess heat).
I used the case found on the Ricoh PC dvd burner currently sold by PC World for £99 (it's the same drive).

A direct swap wasn't possible because the Ricoh drive runs at a constant high speed (It must be configured differently).

The unit now runs silently (although I'm toying with the idea of adding additional ventilation holes above the power supply board).

Next step is to transfer the Remote codes to my Philips Pronto and loose the awful Grundig remote.

Isnt it work waiting for the dvd recorders to have a built in digital tunner, like the video now been released.
