Is the Roku Streaming Stick+ not a possible alternative?

I was really hoping the audio version, this or home mini would get a refresh to be more like an echo dot and allow Bluetooth audio output. I'm weighing up my options to get 2 audio zones and whilst I'm preferring the Google offering as I've got a gen 1 CC and as a service. I'm still tempted by amazon as for almost the same cash I can get smart speakers instead.

At the moment neither comoletelcfit the bill, it's small things like the echo dot cutting the internal speaker out when connected to 3.5mm output, or Chromecast not offering connection to a Bluetooth speaker so I can use it in the garden. They are very minor but if either fixed that small bugbear I'd consider picking up their products.

The home mini has supported BT output for a while now. Initially I had issues with a weird skipping sometimes but that seems to be solved now.

I've got the Chromecast V2 and I'm sure it supports 5GHz wifi...

Now you've said it I've found loads about it, seems a lot of the original reviews never included it and none of the ones I read have been updated with the change. I'm definitely swaying more to the Google side now
Found a JBL playlist for less than the price of an echo so might pick that up for the bedroom with a CC audio in to my receiver to get started and consider adding a home mini once I've tried the zones out, the Bluetooth in the living room will be handy to pair and take the portable battery speaker outside.

It was a firmware update, it was quite a while after I got my mini before it happened so most reviews won't mention it (except those few sites that go back and update their reviews)

I'm not convinced the range is that great though so I'm not sure how well it would work in the garden. Personally I'm thinking of some sort of rechargeable speaker with Chromecast built in might be more suitable. I'm thinking about a similar purchase myself (and a JBL playlist for the bedroom too)

They really need to lower the price of the Ultra, all it does is add 4k and HDR but they're charging over twice the price of a regular device for it!!

They also need to sort things out with Amazon so that can be streamed to chromecasts too

That's what was weird, I find a few more recent reviews and since has updated them but not included that update.

Range shouldn't be an issue, our garden is more a courtyard, I just don't want to run an extension lead or have my surround sound cranked up to hear it outside. My other issue there's not many options available down here, all the one's I've seen on tech sites don't seem to have made it to NZ. I'm still hoping we see more speakers add the feature to improve home use over the standard Bluetooth only connection
