I m looking at buying the new denon 4200 amp to replace my ageing denon avc a1se and replacing the LCR speakers of my m&k thx select speaker package because the can't handle some of the heavy action on some blu rays (pop badly) my question is would the B&W 685 S2 and matching centre be a good replacement? Can't really stretch to new m&k speakers so I'm looking for another option....any thoughts greatly appreciated

What crossover point are you using for the M&Ks? And which ones are they?

My denon amp just has large or small speakers so are set to small,so bass redirected to amp.unless I've missed something all this time there are no other options. The m&k are the 750 I think, part of the thx select package

By the way they only pop on blu rays and only certain films, does the hd audio on blu rays have a lower bass frequency that the speakers can't handle? Never once had an issue when watching dvds

No - audio from DVD and Bluray won't make any real difference to the speakers, so it shouldn't matter as you're still using the same crossover point (minimum 80Hz) regardless of the audio format.

I can't see any speaker in the budget you're looking at taking as much as the 750s will. What you might be experiencing is the difference in power between your previous and current amplification.

I'm still using my old trusty denon avc a1se amp until the new denon 4200 is released.if the audio from dvds and blu ray is the same how come they only pop with blu rays?

Something wrong there then. The 750s will happily play reference level in any normal living room providing the amplification is up to it. How are you sending the Bluray audio into the A1?

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is that maybe the output signal of the Bluray player is a little high for the input of the Denon, causing it to clip or something. It has been a while since of seen an A1, but do you have the input level trims on that model? If so, you could try taking that down by a few dB.

Just another question mate.so should my m&k happily cope with hd audio then? If so it will save me buying new front 3 and just needing some for atmos and dts x

They'll be fine. I used to have a 750 setup with Bluray as a source without any problems. It's just a case of narrowing down what is causing the issue.

Well that'll save me a few bob ☺ on the individual channel levels for each speaker I have the bass set to 8 and treble on 12,would this cause the popping on the blu ray? Is fine with dvd though

Ok,I looked for a input trim....nothing and I also lowered the bass and treble output to each channel but could not stop the front popping at all.i played interstellar (the launch and separation scene) made the L and R channel's pop badly,I've tried everything available on amp and blu ray player but with no success....the only thing I have nt tried yet is hooking up my old bw 602s to use as L R to see if this cures it,if it does the I'm looking at new LCR speakers

Are you sure they're set to small? With bass and treble all on 0, and set to at least 80Hz, the bass/mid driver excursion should be minimal.

    Definitely something not right!

Can you hear anything wrong at lower volumes? Does it only happen when played loud?

I presume the audio decoding on the Bluray player is either set to downsample to Dolby Digital and DTS via the optical output, or set to PCM?

Is there an option for setting sub output to "both"? This sends low bass to sub AND speakers...

That'd be much easier! That'll be tricky though if you're not Birmingham/Coventry based...

☺ as you can see from my avatar....hull mate..bit far eh
I just find it funny that even if I lower the bass to -db it pops but watching dvd at + db bass on LCR produces no popping at all.if they were damaged then I would get that all the time

    Ah yes, didn't see that!

Your situation is odd. Yes, if they were damaged, you'd get the popping even with DVD. Because of that, the only thing I can think of is the audio settings on the Bluray player in relation to Blu-ray Discs (I'm presuming you play your DVDs on the Bluray player).

Might be worth getting a local dealer in to check things out - or maybe a helpful (and local) AVF member...

I finally got around to trying my old bw 602 speakers as L and R and to my suprise the distortion is still there on the lift off scene in interstellar, now this has me thinking I have some sort of issue with my amp (an old denon avc a1se ) very annoying and frustrating not to be able to find the problem and solve it.i am considering a new amp, maybe a denon 4200 or denon 7200 and I WAS thinking of new LCR until I tried my bw 602s but seen as the distortion was present when using them also that negates the need
