Today I made enquires about purchasing an Ellie. During the conversation I was told that Screens Uk have just taken delivery of the new Ellie. As there was much speculation about the release of this product several months ago I thought someone might be interested. Price is said to be £5995. On the subject of the Ellie has anyone any comments before I buy one?
Thanks
Dave

    Rob,
I`m just puzzled that unlike other projector discussions in here-where I can`t see a reluctance to discuss, the Ellie does not seem popular?
I am very interested in talking about the new Ellie in a fresh thread,as opposed to having to leaf through numerous old threads?
Puzzled,Doug.

I don't know why we can't post on the Ellie. I'm sure there are always things to talk about on every projector from everyone at various times. Any way I visited screensuk to see the Ellie, whilst I thought the picture was excellent from a computer generated film, it wasn’t to special from my R1 dvd’s ( a little bit blury). I took my dvd player (DVPS-7700) as Linda thought they had a problem with there player, but when I hooked mine up it was just the same, a shimmer come rolling type interference. As for the new projector the picture was very good (8" tubes and line tripler), again from a computer-generated film, there was no cover to the new projector as it was being modified (apparently it didn’t fit). Made in Italy what do you expect, no offence intended to our Italian friends. John and Linda were very helpful and I would like to thank them. I still haven't made up my mind about what projector to get. I don't want to spend any more than £4000 and I want to throw a 8'x4'6" picture from about 8 to 12 feet. Suggestions welcome.

    Apologies Stuart,
They might be the same old questions/discussions to you,but for me they are new!
I thought from your suggestion off the bat to research the Ellie subject before the thread had got rolling, that it indicated you might be bored with the subject?(you probably are, seeing all those esoteric projectors at M2N).
Anyway, what projectors do you think are better than the Ellie?
Thanks,
Doug

I think the Ellie is a great machine. I've seen one and if I had to buy a new projector, the Ellie would most probably be the one I'd get. Simply because the ceiling on my budget would be about £4k. And there's no way I'd get DLP or LCD.
I was prepared to go the second hand alternative - which is what led me down the path I've taken, and which people choose is purely up to them.
Pretty sure the lenses are plastic, but you'd need to check with Jim. Number is at the www.screensuk.co.uk website.

I'm pretty sure the standard lenses are plastic, they were on the original anyway. I think you can purchase some HD6's for about £900 from screensuk as an optional extra. They also offered component input as an option as well. Haven't looked at thier site for a while, so this may have changed.

    Regards Rob.

    Thanks Richard.
I must have missed the "News" bit when i last looked.
I like the look of the new Ellies specs.
If i was to buy a new CRT, i wouldn't like the idea of having to then buy an external interlacer/scaler. So the new Ellies built in one sounds good. How good it will be in action should make some interesting reading. It also looks like it's got every type of input i would need(and some more!).
If it turns out to be a good machine, it will sell like hot cakes.
The only thorn in its side are the second hand Barco 808s which seem to be selling very cheap.
I myself prefer to buy things brand new if poss, because of the warranty etc.
Although i'm only thinking of LCD/DLP for my future upgrade path, "all in one" packages like the new Ellie may sway me!.
God! nearly two years(-21 months and counting) before my planned upgrade is going to kill me...

First off, I've seen the Ellie but not the new one.
I liked the picture I saw and for a budget projector it is quite good.

The new Ellie XS3000HT is quoting some quite fantastic specifications, tread warily here, some of the figures quoted do not add up.

    Tube life of 15,000 hrs!
I have seen projectors ruined in less than 24hrs. Cut this figure in half and you will have the more realistic average life of a CRT used to show a picture.

IMHO a 7" CRT will not resolve above 1024x768 in 4x3
However the max scan rate of 52 Khz means that full colour resolution is restricted to 800x600 (which would be a far better resolution setting for a 7” CRT anyway).

40Mhz bandwidth will restrict the sharpness of the image above 800x600

    250” diagonal is 5m or 16ft wide - wow

1500 lumens peak white – Some early 9” tubes with Plastic lenses quoted this but never actually achieved it.

Now having said all of that. Specs prove nothing the quality of the image and reliability of the unit is what really counts.
