I currently have a cheap dvd player running with my system and I am now looking at upgrading it.

I have just bought the KEF THX reference series speakers and I am running them with a Pioneer 859RDS 5 channel THX amplifier with the MX10 2 channel power amp for the 7.1 surround sound. The TV is a 42" Rear projection Sony.

I don't want to spend an arm and a leg getting a new dvd player, as I have just had to take out a second mortgage for the speakers, but I was wondering what player would be best suited to the set up.

I was wondering if it would be advisable to get the matching gold coloured pioneer player, which would look good, or get a newer player that will offer me a better picture and sound.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

    cheers

    Keith.

    Lo there m8,

Creative audio are doing the Arcam DV88+ for 500 quid or the DV89 (same thing but does dvda) for 600. Both players are a steal at that price mate.

Picure quality is amazing as is sound quality.

You'll have to get to Shrewsbury to pick 1 up but it's worth doing so.

You might even find someone local willing to price match. Pr stick it on Barclay card and get them to price match.

I just picked up a 3 month old Denon 2200 for £400. Stunning PQ for the money, and I think one is for sale at about that price in the classifieds on here.

We are perhaps assuming your RPTV is a crt design, would this be correst or is it a dlp or something else offering high resolution?

it's the SONY KP-41DS1, I don't know about progressive scan. As I mentioned on the last post, I'm new to all this, and I really need to know what progressive scan is to be able to tell you. apologies for the ignorance.

thanks for your help, I think that I will have to save a bit of money for the arcam if it's really worth the extra money.

just out of interest, how does this compare with the denon 2900?

I did read a review on the denon yesterday and it was up there, but is the arcam still better and worth the extra money?

    cheers

I havent seen them to do the comparison..... I would guess you arent worried about getting every last micron of performance, you just want something good. In which case, im certain the arcam or denon (2900 or 2200) would please you immensely :)

I've just been onto therer website and they only have it left in black, They do still have the DV89 in silver but It's another £100. Is it worth the money or do you know of any other places that sell it at the same price?

    thanks

Well to me it wouldnt be worth the extra, the dv89 only adds dvdA, so unless you are into that, there is no performance enhancement over the dv88+. Of course if you are desperate for silver maybe that justifies the cost for you. As far as other suppliers go, sorry but I know of none. You might be lucky and find a second hand one though..... so many people have bought these you are bound to get a few change their minds and sell on
