After regretting having sold an '98 Audi A3 1.8Turbo Sport 4 years ago and trade it for a '98 Golf IV TDi 110hp, I'm thinking if I should buy a new car.

    Used it will be...

I'm not fond of the Golf, handling, steering, confort is much worse then my ex-A3, or even my ex-girlfriend's A3 1.6...

I'm thinking of another MKI A3, but the TDi Sport 130hp.

Can the MKII A3 TDI Sport 140 hp justify the extra cash?

Other option, wait a year or two, and consider same options...

I preferer gas but gas prices nowadays... :(

I have the MK1 A3, it's an excellent car. I have a friend who bought the new A3 as he liked mine so much, I have to say that the build quality on his was not on a par with mine. This may have been an isolated incident, and Audi sorted every problem he had very quickly, but I can't help thinking that Audi got good at making the Mk1 'cos they'd been ironing out the bugs for so long, they will do the same with the new one if they haven't already.

The alternative is to buy the MK1, and then get the ECU remapped for about 400 quid to get the extra performance and torque.

Seat Léon TDI 130 could be an option...

Not so good looking as an A3 but better than handling the Golf and much better looking in the inside... and cheaper...

    Which one?

A friend of mine has the 1.8T Quattro 180hp, same performance as my previous 1.8T 150hp, but the handling...

I know I'm going to be laughed at, but I'm one of the few that like the BMW 1 Series. I mention it, as the 120D has a superb 170bhp diesel engine with amazing performance figures.

Its rear wheel drive, handle's great and offers BMW's decent build quality.

OK, you can all laugh now :)

    Laugh why?

I'm not a fan of the BMW 1 series looks, nor RWD, but it's a great car...

And the 120D is the only Diesel car that I know of on Gran Turismo 4...:D

Completely disagree with the negative comments about the Leon - just bought my other half the new 1.9 (105bhp) diesel... I would've gone for the 140bhp, but she thought it was 'too fast' (what do women know eh?). I drove the 140 for a few hours one day and was very impressed with it - I drive an Audi A4 Cab, and could barely notice the difference in terms of cabin quality between the 2. Also the Leon seems to come fully loaded pretty much, cruise control, full electrics (windows and mirrors) and lots of other bits and pieces. The 140hp engine is a corker and overall it represented fantastic value for money.

I couldn't see where the extra £6k would go on the equivalent A3 personally, apart from those 4 nice hoops at the front!

The Leon TDI's are great value....particularly the 'old style' Cupra TDI (150). Stunning performance from a Diesel. :)

I like the old Léon, but not the "plastic" Cupra...;)

There was a "not Cupra" TDi 150 too...

I like the Alfa 147 JTD 16v very mush, more space than the others I mentioned, but no space in the boot...:(

New Alfas are not like olf Alfas... and worst than my Golf it's impossible...:thumbsdow

But even an Alta 147 1.6 120hp has worst consumption than my previous 1.T 150hp...:(

But the JTD 16v engine is much better than a TDi...;)
