Any word on how good (or bad!) the new Denon DVD-1600 player is?
Check out this month's HiFi Choice magazine - the DVD1600 was reviewed in the "First Impressions" section.
They were very impressed which is a good sign as they are not generally impressed with a lot of DVD players.
Some of their comments:
"Despite its low price point, this is one of the most accomplished DVD audio players we've heard so far"
"It's an excellent DVD-V player - vibrant with surround movie soundtracks, crisp and even in the picture department. And CD replay is well above average for a sub-£500 DVD, with good rhythm and detail, if a little roughly hewn"
They didn't think it sounded as good in DVD-A as Sony's comparatively priced multi-channel SACD players but blamed this on the sonic quality of the DVD-A software.
Sounds like a good way to spend £500 to me.
Thanks Matt, that sounds pretty good! I'll pick up a HiFi Choice tomorrow and have a read.
All the best,
Do a google search with Denon DVD-1600 player, and there's online reviews chaps.
A friend of mine has one, She is very happy with it.
I have not had a chance to see it yet when I do I'll see if I can write something.
You may like to read the pdf for it
It gets good reviews in Germany

Encaser and DRC - good info, thanks!
As per usual the US version has Faroudja progressive scan for even less $$$ than we are paying (I believe it a version of a Panasonic player RP-56).
Typical! I don't need progressive output at the moment but it would be nice to have it for the future - obviously Denon must think us Brits a backward lot!
I see that the 3800 is superceding the 2800 - looks tasty but likely too expensive for my needs.
Ok, I'm going to order one of these (£429 from AVLand, multi-region RCE compatible). All reports so far have been very positive so I'm going for it! The deciding factor (between this and other similarly specced players) is the lightning fast layer changes - if theres one thing I hate, its a superb player that has a sloooooow layer change. By all accounts the 1600 is no slouch (built-in buffer!)
