The time has come to replace my 2005 BMW 535d and this time I'm thinking of going for a petrol V8/V10. I've been looking at the Audi RS4/RS6 and the Mercedes C63 AMG. I have discounted the BMW M3/M5 as I fancy a change or marque unless I'm convinced otherwise. I've also considered the Jaguar XF but not too keen on the front look.

My requirements are simple; 4/5 doors with plenty of power! :) I have a budget of £35k, which would get me a 2009/2010 model with relatively low mileage (don't want to go older than 2009). Anybody here have experience with any of the cars above or any other that meets my requirements?

I wish I had personal experience of owning any of the cars you've listed...but unfortunately not :( I don't think you can go wrong with any of those cars, what about a V8 XJ, not the quickest thing (less than 400bhp) but good looker compared to the German machines.

The new XJR also looks very very nice, but at £93K before options I think it'll be a few years before I can even start o consider one

I did consider the Jag, especially since I like the XK R and the new F-Type but I'm not so keen on the way the front looks on the XF. The back looks nice. I also think it has the nicest interior too compared to the Audi/Merc.

I think there is also a XJ super sport that has the same drivetrain as the XF R. Given the near 2 ton weight of a XF/XJ I think you really need 400bhp+ to make it feel fast. If you only need 2 seats, a 996 911 turbo must be hard to resist, I know it's got 2 cylinders missing but still not a bad car, or even a C63 AMG C class ....Given your budget, your pretty much spoilt for choice :D

2 seater/2 door is out of the question unfortunately. We have a 2 year old so need a "family" friendly car and can't really justify a second car as we only use it for the nursery run and weekends with the occasional road trip.

I've currently got the C63 with pro pack (LSD, brakes, carbon spoiler & suede wheel) on a 62 plate. Its a great all rounder. In red it looks quite sedated. Looked & drove the E63 but was put off by its size & didnt have the same feel to it.

Think you'll struggle with an RS4. The B7 is mainly 56 - 57 plates and the new ones are out of your price range.

RS6 is certainly a nice car although purely for sound it'd have to be the AMG for me!

Be interesting to see how much you could haggle this down..http://www.pistonheads.com/classifi...engine-huge-spec-sat-nav-bose-20s-fsh/1626518

Certainly a very nice position to be in so good luck with whatever you choose!

Personally I would get the Jag, but only so I can be mesmerized with those motorised air vents haha!

Otherwise, take a look at the RS6, it's rare and a seriously underrated car, you really cannot tell it has a Lamborghini V10 in it! The Mercs have a rep, according to Top Gear, of always being a bit nuts. Do you want something that smokes a lot, or that will smoke other cars a lot?

I think the C63 is leading the way at the moment. As nice as the XF is on the inside, the front doesn't do it for me but I will have a look at it in the flesh. The RS6 would be nice, especially the Avant but, as mentioned, not many of them about. £35k is absolute top of my budget so the Maserati, as nice as it is, is out of the question unfortunately. Going to try and get down to some dealers at the weekend to have a look.

I was tempted to suggest one of those last night but not sure it really sits in the same league as a C63/RS6. I know it does power wise but not sure if it competes anywhere else?

That car should be in the (not) affordable dream cars. Always loved those big Audis. Sadly, will never own one :(

It was put in as a wild card but sort of fits the bill. 4/5 doors, big v8 engine and a fair bit of power. Granted its a little older than the OP wanted but well within budget. Bit like the Monaro VXR its well outclassed by the likes of the Merc/Audi but worth pointing out :p

I think MG did a V8 ZT as well

Some nice suggestions there Arcam_boy, thanks. The Audi S8 does look very tempting but I think it might be a little too big for my wife. I think our current 5 series is as big as I'd go, but it does look very good value. The A5, Bentley are out as they are 2 doors. Same with the Chrysler and Mustang, I'm after a German marque to be honest.

These are two that I'm looking at:

Audi 5.0T FSI V10 RS6 Quattro 4dr Tip Auto HUGE SPEC SALOON- Auto Trader UK

You do get alot car for the money with the RS6!! But be-careful of Keighley Trade Sports & Performance, their cars always come up in Autotrader because of the low price, but a quick Google about their reputation shows there is a reason why their cars are cheap.

Thanks for the tip. To be honest, when spending this much I'd prefer to buy from a proper dealer but the prices are £5k+ for the same spec. There are a lot of C63's on the used market which makes me wonder why?

AMG servicing and maintenance can be really costly at a main MB dealer and if its under warranty I wouldn't risk getting it maintained at a 3rd party tbh

Was talking to my mechanic the other day, and somebody brought in a RS6. The guy had only bought it 2nd hand a couple of weeks earlier, before the "check brakes" light came on. What the guy didn't realise was, the RS6 had the optional cermaic brakes fitted! The guy nearly fainted when he discovered the cost of new pads alone!
