Bought a new bit of kit which has no optical out.

This messes up my setup which was a satellite receiver with optical out and media streamer with optical out going to an optical switch. The HQ (the 4 port in with optical and hdmi . . and 2 outputs out in optical and hdmi)

Had just the 2 optical's into the switch and the one optical out to a surround system with that set constantly to digital in for the surround sound

It occurred to me that I use the HQ 4 port switch with as I said optical and hdmi in

But when I try and use the hdmi in's I dont get picture or sound . . it only seems to work with the optical audio only as a switch ???

which as Ive said my new kit doesnt have . .

Does anyone know:

1. How to fix a HQ 4 port hdmi and optical switch to use hdmi also and not just the optical audio ?
2. Recommend a piece of kit that can use just the hdmi cables (are hdmi cables 5.1 sound?) and has at least 2 inputs for hdmi ? and a optical out from it to plug into the input of my surround sound system ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

The switch you mention has 4 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output. Not at all sure of what you are trying to achieve with it? You'd ordinarilly coonect HDMI sources to the inputs and the one output to a TV or other device with an HDMI input. HDMI can convey both audio and video. If your receiver/amp lacks an HDMI input then this switch is of no use to you. If you are looking for a way to convert HDMI to optical or visa versa then this swirch is no use to you. Also note that optical only conveys audio and not video.

The switch doesn't appear to be very well regarded by those who purchased it on Amazon:

HQ 4 Port HDMI Switch: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

I'd send it back irrespective of whether or not it fascilitates what you need.

Digital audio sourced via HDMI cannot usually simply be converted to optical. You'd need something more specialised than a HDMI switch, something costing quite a bit more than the switch you have. You'd need something like this:

4 x 1 HDMI switch + optical audio ouput. Convert HDMI audio to Optical Audio. 3D support, 1080P. Optical Audio from HDMI, Optical, or ARC. Fast switching time. 4 Independent Optical Audio switching Inputs. 1RU mount

Media Factory - Octava HD41-ARC-UK, HDMI + Optical + ARC switch

What exactly is it you are trying to do? What AV receiver or amplifier are you trying to use for the audio? How are your sources normally connected to your TV? What make and brand of TV do you have?
