New Beta Band LP

Bought this today before driving home. It's called "Heroes to Zeroes". I have to say, after only one listen I confess, I was disappointed. I had been looking forward to this for a while having been a long-time fan but it just seemed pretty, well, shallow, one-dimensional. There was nothing really epic and weird eg Dr. Baker, It's Not Too Beautiful.

I will listen to it again properly at home over the next few days. I have a few albums (DJ Shadow - Endtroducing for example) that just don't translate to the car!

Any opinions welcome.

I read very little music press these days. Can you point me in the direction of any articles / reviews?

Apart from the first track it is easy listening hell i'm afraid. A very poor album. :thumbsdow

All their albums sound the same. The singer's voice doesn't change pitch throughout any track on any album.
I've got all their other albums but I think I'll give this one a miss.

Can't remember exactly. I know UNCUT gave it 2/5 - that said, The Guardian loved it.

A few years ago I heard the track "Round the bend" on the radio and so bought the album on the strength of that. I found the rest of the album very bland and although I tried hard to listen to the rest of it only ever play that one track from it - so this does not surprise me

I really like The Beta Band and have their previous two albums. First listen to this new one in the car and i quite enjoyed it. I do expect to have to have a few listens to get completely into it though. I think they have quite a few subtleties in their work that you tend to miss first time around.

It's hinda hard to notice the subtleties in their music when the blood pouring out your ears is bubbling in agony, begging you not to listen any more.

 Well, it must be just me then.

Had a really good listen over the weekend and the album is really growing on me now. Can't get track 11 out of my head at all.

Granted it's not as good as the first two but it's still a good album in my opinion. Going to see them live on Saturday night too :smashin:

It's a disappointment in comparison to Hot Shots II... :thumbsdow

Having read the first quote, the second was a foregone conclusion as I've heard some of Steve's favourite music :thumbsdow
