I was looking forward to the new teletext service on BBC, but now I've seen it I'm not so sure. The BBC digital teletext was great before (much better than the feeble effort from Sky) but I think they have now taken a step backwards. It doesn't offer you a smaller screen to view tv now it overlays a translucent menu so you miss about a third of the picture as it's not really possible to see through it. It is far slower now (on my digibox) and is probably as slow as Sky teletext.
I keep my terestrial service for the teletext as I've found the digital offerings to be not as usable. I was hoping this new rversion from the Beeb was going to mean I could get rid of terestrial - but now it's getting worse
Has anyone else noticed it being much slower now ?

Digital teletext is very, very slow. Wondered if it was my digibox (an old Pace Ondigital box).

Like you, I often switch to terrestial teletext as it's so much quicker although the digi service looks better.

I agree with JohnG. The new design seems slower, but I really hate the way it covers almost half the screen. At least before, you could watch the (smaller) full screen image while waiting for pages to load. It probably seems slower, because you can't really watch the image onscreen properly while waiting. A major step backwards IMO.

I think it's worth while telling the BBC what you think - I have. The more negative feedback they get, the more likely they are to give us what we want - hopefully.

There is a points of view messageboard at:-
    BBC Message Board

I emailed them directly but can't find the address at the moment but will look for it. The BBC site now seems to hide the actual contact us email addresses - they seem to be discouraging that now - maybe we can moan about that as well ;)

I take it back. Just bought my folks a Pace DVTA and teletext is very fast on that. So obviously my old ex-ITV digital box (also Pace) isn't up to much. Bit like the channel really!

I got a reply from them about the service on Freeview:

    Dear Philip

Many thanks for your recent email.

Due to bandwidth restrictions, BBCi will remain in its current format on the Digital Terrestrial Television platform.

    Kind regards

The new BBC digitext is definitely a step backwards. The superb ergonomics of the previous version have all but gone.

I liked the small nav bar the bottom of the screen, now this menu covers a third of the screen. Another key feature previously was the way you channel you were watching got swithed to a small window. Now you are forced to watch a small feature report.

Skytext seems a lot easier to use now.
