After Mad Max became big, do you remember all those Italian cash-in types that went direct to video on labels such as VTC and EIV. They always had excellent cover art (bit like the sword & sorcery tiltes) that was far better than actual movie.

Well I can remember a "gem" called "New Barbarians" were the post apocalyptic world was threatened by some religious zealots types. The leader was George Eastman if I recall correctly (from Anthropophagus Beast fame).

One of the good guys was Fred Williamson, the other was some ubiquitous Italian muscle thug. Lots of wacky "chop shop" style vehicles. Also some bird with explosive tipped arrows or crossbow bolts.

The weird bit that stuck in my mind was that the hero got captured and tied to a device similar to that used on Casper Van Dien in the flogging scene in "Starship Troopers". Except this time they forced the guy forward and sodomised him. Strange plot line if you ask me. May be it's an european thing?

Anyone else remember this or any of the other "Mad Max" style cash ins? Bronx Warriors and the like?

Yes i remember The New Barbarians and also The Bronx Warriors, way back when i had just left school and bought my first VCR.Films like these were quite popular in my local video shop and it would sometimes take a few attempts to find a copy in stock, but in most cases when you did get to see it you were dissapointed. This was in the pre-"video nasty" era and there was an amazing amount of new videos flooding the market all trying to out do each other in bad taste or gore, some of which have turned into cult classics.

Holy Cow I was just talking about some of these with my workmates.
What was the one with the cover with a robotisiced guy with no legs stuck on some small tank treads instead. Don't think this was even in the movie!

My Dad used to be really bad for hiring stuff like this: he'd literally go by the cover and after viewing when he was ribbed a lot for choosing such a rubbish movie he'd just reply " well it said it was really good on the back of the cover"

As if they are going to tell you the movie is rubbish and not worth renting on the back of it !

The best/worse one he rented was a dubbed japanese war movie set in vietnam with all the American troops played by Japanese actors .... totally mad !!!!!

I remeber the New Barbarians. It had truck loads of gore. I dont think even Saving Private Ryan had as many exploded body parts as this one. Can't rember the story just the violence.

Anybody remeber "Time Slip". A group of soldiers somhow go back in time and have to fight **** loads of samurai. Loads of blood and guts. Heads flying everywhere. Those crazy japs. Thought it was excellent at the time.:D

These were all out at about the same time as "Shogun Assassin". Another film I seem to rember enjoying.:D

Oh those were the days I was about 13 and you could see all the video nasties you liked. The nastiest thing about most of them was they were crap films.

Oh well thats the tabliod press for you. They have yor best interests at heart. Films make you murder people you know. Not that you were unstable in the first place and your barister tells you to blame it on a film you have never seen.

I like shagging must have seen to much porn.[IMG]

Wasn't the one with the half-guy on tank tracks called Eliminators or something like that? I remember my little bro rented it and it felt like we were watching it for 3 days. Truly awful.

Time Slip aka Time Wars, Gigoku Samurai etc, on the other hand, starring Jap sub-Bruce Lee clone Sonny Chiba was (and still is) ace. What a concept! What a movie!
Another 2nd rate movie I still enjoy is William Malone's Titan Find aka The Mutant, with one particularly sleazy Klaus Kinski. Now he made some really odd movie choices back in the day.

Oh how I pine for an uncut Garbage Pail Kids movie on disc.

Is Time Slip/Wars Etc avalible on dvd anywhere. I really did enjoy it and wouldn't mind seeing it again.

Anyone rember Turkeyshoot. That was another OTT film about people hunting prisioners for sport. I rember people running around in orange boiler suits getting killed in horrible ways. A couple escape at the end. Cuts down on prison bills I supose.

Seem to rember seeing Titan Fiend can't rember what it was about though.

What about Deep Red (profundo Russo) with David Hemmings. That was an excellent film. If the gore was way over the top. Boiling faces, head run over by a lorry. All in a whos doing it.

They just don't make films like this anymore.

Sadly, Time Slip isn't on disc anywhere at the moment, just a pretty awful looking vhs that looks like its been mastered from a 2nd rate vcd.

I think this was a retitled re-edited Lone wolf and cub movie of which there are several and I think they were recently rereleased.

Shogun Assassin is avalible for vipco (wwwhorrorvideo.co.uk). Along with some other Video Nasty titles. most of which are still not the versions we would have seen in the 80's. Even though they say uncut.:(

The lone wolf and cub thing gets confusing. I rember seeing other titles around, like Lone Wolf and Cub. Baby Cart Man, Return of Baby Cart man etc.

Not sure if their all the same film apart from the "Return Of". Somone must know.

I just found 6 baby cart titles on Play. All mention Lone wolf and it's the same guy on the cover.

Yup, it contained most of the blood and violence from the first 2 (of 6) Lone Wolf and Cub movies (Sword Of Vengeance and Baby Cart At The River Styx) but sadly very little of the actual plots. All 6 were released in the UK last year (some with cuts) on the Artsmagic "Warrior" label but were lacking in the picture/sound front. Animeigo, the US distributors, have new anamorphic transfers from the remastered Jap prints of all 6 movies and have announced their release for some time end of this/beginning of next year. At last.

Interesting point about Shogun Assassin - the voice of the leader of the female Ninja's was dubbed by stand-up comedienne Sandra Bernhard

Where do you get all this info from Rambo.

I just read the detail on play of sword of vengence. Which said that shogun Assassin was an edited version. All I can remeber from the film is the blades that came out of the wheels of the cart and the hats of the female nija's and at one point lone wolf put a sword through the top of some guys head. Nothing about the story. I think at the age I was when I saw it all I was interested in was Gore. Thats all I can remeber from most of these films. The gorey moments. How sad is that.

    Have you seen them all.

Sandra Bernhard how mad is that.

I was a Shogun Assassin fan as a kid and then once I grew up (a bit) I got into Jap cinema.
I've seen all the Baby Cart flicks, had (but now traded) all the UK releases, and I can't wait for the US discs to get released. Baby Cart At The River Styx is my personal favourite, although all 6 play like Spaghetti Westerns in style, especially the use of extreme close-ups. Ogami Itto (Lone Wolf) has some particularly tasty weapons hidden in that cart of his.
Shogun Assassin's probably worth getting for now, but it really doesn't compare to the original versions.

sorry to drag this up, but these movies are genius.

In my book, any movie with a fantastic drawn picture on the front cover that in no way represents the movie needs to be seen.

Just "aquired" 2020 the new gladiators. Which is another, aparently it inspired total recall.

And yes, fred williamson is in the lead!

i remember "eliminators". remember the ninja bloke who jumped through a moving fan to disable it from the other side. utter gash.

anybody remember "actione mutante" a spanish film from about 10 years ago. it was bad for many reasons, but strangely watchable.

    not seen new barbarians.
