My normally ever faithful Cambridge Audio 650BD Blu Ray has suddenly developed picture issues.

As I recently purchased an LG OLED55B7V it's got me mulling whether to just upgrade to a 4K UHD Blu Ray player. I do have some SACD & DVD Audio discs, but not sure if I should allow these to dictate what player to choose. I'd certainly need one with multi region capabilities.

Any suggestions on a player gratefully appreciated.

    Front display isn't important as I'm guessing there's a full GUI/on screen

The Cambridge Audio CXUHD is now in RS & would be superb playing 4k UHD Blu-rays with the LG oled. I have started an owners thread for the CXUHD & I'm very impressed with mine.
    Its not cheap
The Cambridge Audio CXUHD would be ideal partnered with the LG oled & seems to be multi-region out of the box, a true universal disc player. Just arrived at RS its not cheap, but seems to be a quality universal disc transport. You will need an AV amp with HDMI I/P as there are no analogue o/ps. If you dont want to pay that much money the Sony X800 is a universal disc player but not multi-region without a mod, its a great little player & great value.

I'm reviewing the CXUHD at the moment and I'm curious as to why you paid £700 for it, instead of just buying the Oppo UBD-203 for £649?

Lack of analogue outputs isn't an issue as everything goes via my Marantz SR6009

Got it for £690 with £10 VIP club offer, still £40 more than the Oppo I know. I guess its brand loyalty mostly having owned the 650BD & then the 751BD players & found them to be very good especially for music ie. SACD & DVD/A & CD, very important to me. I also have a Cambridge Audio 751R AV amp/receiver. I understand that as its only a transport & the signal is digital via HDMI to the Dacs in the amp I shouldnt be able to hear any difference whatever player I connected but the CXUHD certainly seems to have more depth to the music than the Sony X800. I cant comment on the Oppo UBD-203 as I have'nt heard one but I was advised by RS that they had done a critical veiwing/listening of Oppo vs CXUHD & they thought the CXUHD was just better.

I've got to say by 650BD has been a worthy CD player. I originally plugged an external hard drive in the back of it but it couldn't cope with the number of files. Cambridge Audio told me at the time they'd only tested it with around 20,000 tracks.

Sony X800 for me. Got it for £299 from Amazon.co.uk. Not had a single problem since purchase a couple of months ago and it plays SACD very well imo... Just checked and now at £289.

You have a wonderful OLED with glorious Dolby Vision. Why on earth would you want to save a few hundred pounds and never be able to utilise your screen to its proper potential?

Just get the Oppo or Camebridge Audio machines and get it over and done with. Remember it is MR for free by using the superdisc for DVD. uHd is MR anyway, so that leaves just blu ray.

Oppo 203, great player, costly but it oozes quality and performance.

Panasonic UB700/UB900 can probably still be found, there were some stunning bargains for them earlier in the year.

The formats they support, they support in an excellent way. UB400/UB300 have the same picture quality but the construction is not quite as good.

Thanks for all your input. It's certainly given me food for thought so to speak. If personal circumstances change then I certainly fancy the Oppo but we'll see. Going to uninstall my Blu Ray and take it in for inspection first.

Could you please explain, how the units are connected? How did you compare them sound wise against each other? Why the CA is better than the Sony?

Both the Sony X800 & the CXUHD have 2 HDMI O/Ps, one for high quality video + sound to the TV or display & the other can be used for sound to a multi-channel AV amp. That is how I connected them as my Cambridge Audio 751R AV amp is a a couple of years old & doesnt have latest HDMI spec.
As for sound quality, the CXUHD paired with the 751R just sound sublime when playing SACDs etc. Thats not to say the Sony didnt sound good but the CXUHD somehow sounds more analogue & less digital, dont know has thats achieved as the signal out is high quality PCM (ie. digital). Some people might say its just my brain justifying the outlay but I dont think so.

A lot of factors must be taken into account. Did you bit stream DSD or PCM on both devices? The thing can be that you receiver handles better PCM signals or vice versa.
