looking myself today cos I presume this is the same player steve may talks about in last month's HCC editorial, any player that upscales to hd via component will be really useful for people like me who have no dvi or hdmi inputs on their plasma, anyone out there got 1 of these players then?

Just curious as to why you think this will improve the picture from DVD (an SD format)

not just that but it also plays the new hvd discs (holographic video discs) and will throughput any high def signal such as 720p or 1080i, and even change it to 1080p.

    can't be bad for $225.

i also found out that hero and house of flying daggers are available in hvd format in 720p and loads of new movies are due for release in the 1080i.

hornydragon, how can a dvd player that outputs component and HVD bee horrendous for just over £100.00, if you have read up on this format you will see (and feel free to correct me if I am wrong) that it outputs high def material via component which is a godsend to the 100's if not 1000's of plasma owners who have no HDMI or DVI thus no chance of ever receiving SKY HDTV, this seems like an absdolute stonker of a machine considering what it promises. To most of the forum users who let's face it must have a few quid, the figure is a paltry sum!!

i'll let you know what its like then, shall i?

i just ordered it and two hvd's.

doesn't ship till may 7th though.

even if its not that good on high def, the figures stack up for a pretty darn good sd dvd player. and flippincheap too.

It could be utter rubbish PQ wise what i am saying is there is no reason to assume it will look great I have never seen HVD and read very little about it. BUT when a machine promises lots for a small price it more often than not falls short on delivery............ Is there any proof that this will look better on an SD plasma (which most of the none HDMI/ DVi units you refer to are) than a DVD player with high quality 576i/p and 480i/p output? Or are you just hooked on the marketing BS? High Quality Video is so much more than the output of a cheap player..................or even the capacity of the media......Super VHS can look superb, done properly Beta Jawdropping.....DVD incredible. If you can aford to throw £100+ at unkown machine and minority format (SVCD anyone?) be my guest. Just dont be surprised if the results "arent all that, girlfriend" ;)

Panasonic man I will be interested to hear what you think, dont forget to budget for import duty & VAT tho.....22% ish on total order cost inc shipping IIRC. I might have have a look when it arrives (where do you work BTW PM me if not happy about posting it publicly)

It came to $293.00 inc Hero HVD and Shipping (@$50)

I work at the Shop@Panasonic shop in Walsall, West Midlands.
and it will be on show there for a while because we have no way of displaying true hd on the new panasonic pv500 plasmas yet.

(and ive got to break the news gently to my wife)

shes actually quite good with it all.

most women would say £1600 for a teely is too much but she helped me pick the denon avr3805 amp as my main receiver, kef speakers...

no its not that she doesnt want this sort of stuff, its just we sold the car last week to pay bills and she hates the bus.

    I LOVE CREDIT CARDS, ME!!!

i contacted the shop in the u.s and they said they usually ship marked as a gift which means no tax or duty, i buy loads of stuff from america and have only paid duty once so you may be in luck, makes it even cheaper then, I may pop in your shop mate as I travel to aldridge quite a lot, maybe we can prove hornydragon wrong or vice versa, we may have to eat humble pie, let's see!

I got it, played with it and i think it is excellent.

I put it on bandridge profigold component leads to a th42pe50 panny plasma, flicked it to 1080i, and sat back.

I played an HVD disc i ordered, something about pretty birds amongst other things. WOW! it looks fantastic! You get all the detail in the feathers and the colours are so vivid. No sign of any digital noise or blocking AT ALL. Seriously!

Its got 1080p capability, but i can't get to see what that looks like cos the plasma won't accept the input and haven't had chance to try it on HDMI yet cos all we got is the PTAE700 projector.

I am seriously impressed, and for £167 shipped with two HVD's as well.

(mind i had to pay the UPS guy £19 for handling or something).

    God you're quick.

Yeah its really good, i put behind enemy lines and spiderman 2 in there and it really impressed all of us. We got people asking to buy it and everything cos it matches the plasmas and genuinley gets the "ooooh" factor from walkers-by.

We've also been told we might have the high-def pv500's next week, so fingers crossed cos that would be even better.

Answer: The HVD support form is:
    720*576i/50HZ
    720*576p/50HZ
    720*480I/60HZ
    720*480P/60HZ
    1280*720p/60Hz
    1280*720p/50Hz
    1920*1080i/50Hz
    1920*1080i/60HZ
    VGA/SVGA/SXGA

    i pasted this from www.HVD.cn

i dont know how it is put on the disc, the machine can certainly turn it into any output.

Hmm i have been looking into this a Holographic disks are still some way off i think what you have is an EVD or FVD player (I think its EVD) EVD: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/11/20/china_unveils_dvd_killer_video/
    FVD: http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2005/03/29/taiwan_fvd_launch/
But if looks good than thats great, I do think that EVD or FVD will have very limited mass market appeal in the West as none of the major hollywood studios have signed up to the format, I wonder if bollywood would go down the EVD route? that would be interesting....

no, its definately HVD, and i was wrong in saying holographic.

it stands for high clarity video disc, and is native 720p.

(actual translation from jap web page is high clearness video disc)

    if you look at www.hvd.cn
the logo on the site is the same as the front of the cover on the case and in the title sequence on both the films i got.

:) Any more news on this dvd player?
PANASONICMAN have you tried it on hi def plasma yet?
    All answers very much appreciated.
Would it work/give a better pic than my pioneer 575a on the panasonic a100 projector?

    Thanks in advance.
