Great review Cas, but this is not (thankfully) a faithful adaptation. In the original novel, the Crains built the house but have been dead for a couple of hundred years by the time the story starts. Theo, Luke, Eleanor are stangers who have been summoned to the house as part of ghost experiment lead by Dr. Montague (played by star of the '63 The Haunting Russ Tamblyn in the cameo in the new series). Flanagan had the sense to mix it up a wee bit, and given that he's a massive Stephen King fan, little wonder than a little bit of It's structure worked its way in.

Really chuffed this has been so well received. Mike Flanagan has been cranking out great horror film after great horror film, but not getting much attention out of genre circles, so the mainstream success of this is well deserved.

I have to say I didn’t find it that scary. And I’m a real chicken when it comes to horror.

Thanks for the review Cas, but I have to say I found this dire. Yes, I realize I'm in the minority here but it's just trope on trope mixed with attempts to make you scold yourself/pet. And, the ending disappears so far up it's own sugar pot I felt in danger of slipping into a diabetic coma.

You had me at Stephen King & IT.................:D

Thanks for the review Cas, I will now give this a go as generally I prefer action/Sci-fi or historical/period tv shows (and they are a plenty on Netflix!)

Thanks for the review Cas,i have watched 2/3 episode so far i found it to be more of an drama about a dysfunctional family, than a horror serie, and a couple of character annoy the hell out of me :(

Also i did rather like the movie, wish it would come out on blu ray :)

Good review Cas, I enjoyed the series and would have given it a solid 8/10 myself.

I didn't particularly find it scary, but I did have a few shivers down my spine when walking around my own house late at night with the lights off :)

      I loved this too.

Wasn't so much "scary", but plenty of shivers to be had. I've recommended this show so many times and I still haven't stop harping on about it in work.

Two episodes in and loving this. I'm a big fan of creepy psychological stuff. It's not scary in a jump out of your seat way, but it does crank up the tension very effectively. The only problem is that I have to narrate the scary bits as my wife is usually hiding behind a cushion!

"It's no wonder that Stephen King himself has lauded this as being 'close to a work of genius'

That family sure do love their hyperbole!

Stephen King's son proclaimed last year's IT as 'one of the five scariest films ever made'...

I'm trying with it, but so far it seems more about mental health issues than traditional horror, and I hate things that try and lure you in by pretending to be something there're not. I will, persevere though.

10/10 for me, thought it was great and it spooked me, especially watching in the dark. Brilliant stuff.

      Great review.

I am a bit of a wet blanket when it comes to horror but got sucked into this after ep 1. I feel like I fell in love with it a little bit. Can’t remember the last time I was counting the hours at work to get back home and glue my eyes to the TV. The trickle trickle build up of the horror elements was brilliant, keeping it unpredictable to the end.

I did find it useful to wear baggy jumpers that could easily be pulled up to hide behind. Fortunately, the missus, who is made of sterner stuff, was happy to tell me what I’d missed.

I enjoyed this, I did think they stretched out the last few episodes a little, but the first half of the series was superb.

Glad it has been well received though and a lot of people talking about it.

There is a BR of the original film, I picked it up on a 2 for 15 deal at Fopp. Mind you it's still in it's wrapper so no idea if it's any good or not. As to the TV series I held off cos I love the book and this sounds like they've Kinged it. But maybe I'll give it a go with such high praise.

I watched the first 3 or 4 eps when it first started streaming but haven't gone back to finish it yet. To be honest I'm not sure if I will. My Mrs carried on watching it for a few more but gave it the boot after episode 8.
To be fair, though, she said she was expecting something more like the film adaptations rather than a family drama with ghosts floating around in the background

This show isn't straight horror, so I'm not surprised you didn't enjoy it. It's psychological horror which is a world apart from something like Haute Tension. The horror genre is pretty broad.

i thought it was pretty decent. some freaky moments which added to the enjoyment. i am not a fan of this genre in general but i thought this was well done and the core story around the characters was decent. the ending was a bit meh but you find that with this type of stuff. i thought it was definitely worth a watch

Totally agree it’s not typical horror.

Something, I thought it did brilliantly though was blend tragic with creepy.

Something would happen that makes your heart ache, and moments later it ratchets up the intensity further by throwing something super creepy at you. Appreciate it’s not working for everyone but those one-two punches worked very well on me (and my poor nerves) - thought it was very clever really.

I’m half way though, I’m enjoying it but the acting is awful, it’s t.v acting and it’s rotten.

Really enjoyed this over the course of one Saturday, horror stories can be hit and miss sometimes, you watch something unheard off (no publicity) and it was WOW i.e. Troll Hunter and then those big budget ones that are shockingly bad.
This was a nice surprise but probably a tad too long by 2 episodes I would say. Tad slow sometimes too but its not about big tall monsters with Venom type teeth and about to devour you because you look like a KFC Zinger burger.
It's more about the psychosocial & mental aspect of it all.
Apparently it's based on a brilliant book and credit to the screenwriter also too.
Worth a watch if you're not into House Of Cards (final season) which was released today.

Talk of a season two but totally different story and cast.

      Thank you Cas.:)

It’s a family drama as much as haunted house show.

Skipped the last two? You're nearly at the end buddy...
Guess it makes the other 8 eps pointless.

Still believe not a patch on David Soul's *Salem's Lot*

You would know that if you grew up in the 70/80s...
