I know Netlfix has an algorithm for everything. Just a shame they can't have one which pointpoints the reasons why virtually everything they touch ends up mediocre.

Hard not to feel that even the imminent Scorcese Netflix film will have a similar fate.

Their algorithm is set where it's acceptable for Netflix when it only mocks white males.

I'm very much looking forward to The Irishman next year, but also have the same concerns. When even the likes of the Coens are turning our middling fare on Netflix, it'll be interesting to see if Scorsese can buck that trend (and he's certainly had a stellar budget to play with...).

Unlike disagreeing with you over last week's Outlaw King Cas(when I appeared to one of the only AVF members who enjoyed it), I'm absolutely with you on Buster Scruggs. I honestly thought that as one of my favourite genres, and the Coens at the helm, it would likely be a candidate for film of the year. How wrong I was...

I've been mulling things over since lunchtime, and I still stand by my original rating - 6.5/10.
Far from a disaster, with some golden moments, there's too much that didn't fly with me for any higher than that. Shame.

Very harsh review, this is getting very high scores pretty much everywhere else.

I watched it tonight and, - disclaimer, the Coens are right up there with my favourite filmmakers- I absolutely loved it. Incredibly original, inventive, well written, superbly acted and beautiful to look it. The Zoe Kazan story was perhaps the best, but the opening titular Buster Scruggs piece was pure Coens and a joy from start to finish.

An easy 9/10 from me. The best Netflix movie since Annihilation, and easily one of the best things I've seen this year.

I think Cas’s review is fair. We found it very patchy, with some of the stories going on far too long.

The best Coen Brothers films feature strong leading actors, whose performances are sustained throughout the whole (sometimes considerable) running time.

This one suffered from the fragmented format, with few shared themes. Oh Brother Where Art Thou it ain’t.

Watched last night, I liked some of the stories, but some of them were a complete drag.

Beautiful picture though, did anyone else notice this was Dolby Vision 1080p on Netflix ?

      6/10

I watched this last night and thought it was excellent. I wonder if it had not been a Netflix feature, and just been shown at the cinema, if it would've been seen as being distinctly made-for-Netflix?

I actually feel like watching this again tonight.

Watched the trailers and couldn't wait to see it. Then saw the review score... Hmmm. Hopefully it will still be a decent watch It looked like 4k too, impressive if its just HD.

Nearly didn't watch it with a 6/10 but we gave it a go and glad we did. Highs and lows but overall enjoyable.
Think it's better watched over a couple of sittings.

I've already mentioned it in the other thread, usually love the Coens work but found this very hit and miss.
The 1st segment, Buster Scruggs was great fun. Most of the others felt like filler.
I liked the Gold Panning segment and the ending to the Wagon train segment. The James Franco segment was ok, but the Liam Neeson and Brenan Gleeson segments I really did not get on with.

      5.5/10

If the Coen's wanna go ahead and make a feature length film out of the Buster Scruggs segment, that'd be fine by me, god damn was that fun to watch. I did find it odd how different the tone of that segment was compared to the rest, though. I expected the other segments to be as absurd but they never went as far as that one, almost felt like they blew the films load showing that one first.

The rest of it was generally entertaining, although the Liam Neeson seqment was repetitive and the last seq I honestly found boring. But the cinematography for the Gold Prospector bit was breathtaking, definitely some of the best shots the Coen's have ever done, despite Roger Deakins not working on this film.

Part of me wishes they stuck with it being a mini-series but this film will do.

I really enjoyed it, even the chapters not liked by others as already mentioned. 8/10 at least from me. Gorgeous to look at especially the Tom Waits chapter, you could frame some of those shots and hang on the wall.
