Got to say Cas, I think 6/10 is pretty harsh. I'm a sucker for a solid period epic, and whilst this fails to reach the heights of Gibson's Braveheart (and was never going to, frankly), there's much to enjoy with this. If I had seen this at my local multiplex, I certainly wouldn't feel shortchanged.

Another week, another new Netflix movie. They're mounting up.

One small gripe with the review Cas - why the use of Americanisms? I thought you were a Brit? "and then crashing to a halt just as it's gotten started.", should have read "just as it got started".

Sorry to be picky, but the creeping use of Americanisms into English is a source of annoyance.

I think this one might end up being a little divisive because if I had seen it at my local multiplex I'd have probably given it less.

Cheers for the review. I don't really fancy anything with Pine in these days to be honest (Hell or High Water was an exception). And your review just cements what I was already feeling about it.

Will give it a look anyway, low expectations will likely help in this case.

Really?! I had my sound system cranked up through the roof (Mrs Drax was out, so no grumbling about being "in the damn Odeon!";)), and it really added to things. I can only imagine what a screening with some real kit might have sounded like. Then there was that terrific cinematography that would look way better than my 'measly' 55" presentation...

The word 'got' always makes my gout play up and should be banned: "just as it started" is sufficient.

Yes, unfortunately, all the kings horses and Dolby Vision couldn't help put this together for me.

Honestly, I was all-in for another re-team after Hell and High Water, and stuck with it pot-committed past the hour mark, but come the end just couldn't find the soul to this. Nothing really memorable at all and really made me want to watch Braveheart or even The Patriot just to wash the feeling away.

Perhaps I prefer my fictionalised historical dramas to be a little more rip-roaring (it's not as if this was particularly character-driven to make up for it either). The confrontations in both of the Gibson movies just had consequences.
I don't think I even recognised half of the people that died in this as significant characters (were there any?), and the final fight was so anticlimactic entertainment-wise.

But as I say, (felled) horses for (piked) courses. I'm a big Netflix apologist, and thought they were on something of a roll, and even so this just didn't work for me.

I saw a clip of this the other day and his accent wasn't great but, to be fair, our accents aren't the easiest to get right. Even I struggle to understand us sometimes

My favourite Scottish word is "fitba" which is Scottish for Association Football.

My English friends take great delight in asking me to say 'purple burglar alarm' - absolutely impossible in a Glaswegian accent

Mel Gibson's accent in braveheart was about as authentic as the "history".

Thanks Cas. I watched this last night. I think Florence Pugh's performance stood out, and apart from that it was pretty much as you reviewed. The production was good but I would have liked to have seen less build-up and another 5 - 10 minutes at the end. Worth a watch but not a Saturday night viewing IMO.

I watched and enjoyed this and for a long time was wondering what the negativity was all about. However as time went on I began losing interest until by the end I totally agree with your 6/10. Even the big battle didn't reignite my passion for the film. And that I think was a vital missing ingredient that Braveheart had in spades: passion.

Watched it last night and it was just OK. Nothing compared to Braveheart. When I think about it, nothing interesting really happened until the final battle? It just sort of started and ended? (If that makes sense)

This had great potential and has an epic fighting to get out of it, but ultimately it was just too clunky for me. Hell of High Water is an amazing film and to be fair Chris Pine is very good in this, the script, budget and direction let it down unfortunately.

I thought it was good and a solid 7 if we going all Strictly. I am interested to see what others thought about the DV picture as it was hit and miss in equal measure for me. I suspect it’s Netflix implementation though.
