"Even Netflix can't ruin a Jeremy Saulnier film"

Thought that was bloody good (emphasis on the bloody). 3 for 3 for Saulnier (not seen Murder Party), although too soon to say how it compares to his revious two films. Found myself a little frustrated by the vague narrative towards the end, and although I thought Jeffrey Wright and Riley Keough (one to watch) were excellent, I think Alexander Skarsgard was miscast. He just comes across as a lump of wood. However the atmosphere, score, locations and performances were true to form, and as usual he doesn't hold off on the extreme violence. 7.5/10

Tonight's viewing sorted. Just got the Dolby Vision update on my Sony so it's a good test by the sounds of it.

Watched it this morning, had to move from Apple Dolby Vision it was too dark (even with the curtains closed) and go use the tv app instead. Great movie, I enjoyed it and the shoot out was well produced. Worth a watch. Was expecting Jeffery Wright to say more words ( he was sort of in a withdrawn state)
Nice to watch something that did not contain aliens or superheroes. I watched Mandy last night and that was WOW!
      Give a solid 7.5/10

      Thanks Cas.

PS: Give the movie time, it suddenly takes off..

I gave this a gander last night. It was ok but I'll need a rewatch as I drifted off a few times.

Bought to light some serious banding on the old oled though. Though will need to check on a blu (my internet doesn't meet min recommend Netflix speeds so could be compression).

Cheers, will add this to the ever-expanding list! Never even heard of it before today!

I don't rate Alexander S. at all if i'm honest. Very little I've ever seen in him that I've considered much good. Hopefully this bucks that trend.

I loved Blue Ruin and The Green Room so I had high hopes for this.
I liked it, a very good shoot out scene but the whole cast spent the movie mumbling to each in a depressive monotone.
Also am I also the only one who couldn’t disconnect Jeffery Wright from Bernard from Westworld, it was almost the same confused character.

      Very true.

I actually gave up on it but after reading your comment decided to go back in and it was actually half decent once it got going.

I think Cas is spot on, a solid 7.

He's completely wooden in this and the worst thing about it frankly. Yet he's actually fairly versatile. His persona in Straw dogs for example as a simmering alpha male redneck; and his much wimpier turn as the far-too-nice bridegroom in Melancholia (his best performance IMO). Since then they've tried to market him as the strong silent type and it's just awful. He's just not leading man material.

He (Alex S) walks round like he’s auditioning to be the next terminator he’s that robotic.

James Badge Dale (thanks IMDb) on the other hand was superb imo.

Agree re the banding, a few scenes my Oled didn’t shine with

The darkness I can cope with but what’s with the mumble core and people whispering all the time so you can’t tell what’s going on (not that the plot made much sense anyhow).

A disappointment and quite frankly dull.

Oh and before anyone suggests otherwise although Netflix are not alone in the mumbling stakes I can hear perfectly well what folk are saying on Freesat, IPlayer and Blu ray but (in this case through a denon amp and 7.1 B and W system via Apple TV) dialogue was pretty dreadful?

managed to get another free month from netflix so thought id give this a go, it was so bad I had to download it and run it through MADVR to apply some heavy debanding to deal with the dreadful low light and compression artefacts, once i'd done that it was very watchable, even in the dark scenes.

I much preferred wind river, didnt think the narrative made much sense at all, its all very well leaving some gaps for the audience to fill in but there were just to many holes, well not holes really, more like assumptions you had to make about their drives for taking the actions they did, their primal instincts, those he was implying were shared with the wolves didnt really complete the jigsaw for me, didnt really explain all of his / her / their action.

I can see what he was trying to do, just dont think he pulled it off this time.

Just about managed to get through this hard slog of a movie but only just.I just can't understand how netflix manage to produce so much guff when they throw so much money at everything.
They have some decent tv programmes but their films are way below par.I suppose I shouldn't complain too much it's only a tenner a month.

We watched half of this last night (as usual, wife got tired by 9pm) and was ok what I've seen so far.

All these comments about it being too dark, are you all watching in 4k HDR? I've watching in bog standard 1080p and found it ok? Only complaint about a scene that was too dark is where the woman was in the nip :D

I've actually preferred his TV work over anything he's done in the movies. He was good in Generation Kill, and until they completely botched his character in True Blood, he was decent enough in that role as well.

      My take...
      • Beautifully shot
      • Atmos soundscapes were wonderful
      • Too ponderous
      • All the dialogue came from secondary characters (police chief, machine gun guy), leaving the central characters inadequately painted, and therefore cardboard and boring
      • Since the central conceit appears to be some old native-Alaskan wolf myth, at least some time could have been taken to familiarise the audience with said myth. That way we wouldn't be left gawping at the pretty pictures but wondering what the **** is going on like babies in a planetarium
Would not recommend unless I had a friend whose prime interests were Alaskan wolf myths and people's heads flying apart.

I think Cas' 7/10 is fair, though. It's very pretty, and if you already subscribe to Netflix, it's also free. Were it not free I would probably drop it down to a 6/10, personally.

The HDR stuff is poorly handled by netflix. The ABL decreases and because of the hopeless bandwidth netflix allot to 4k, you get significant compression artefacts in dark scenes.

      Finished this just now.

Was enjoying it mostly, but that ending had me scratching my head. Did I miss something?

So read this: Hold The Dark Ending Explained

Yeah. Looks like I did miss quite a bit
I blame having to watch it over two nights, and also having our 2 year old daughter awake for the middle part wanting to look at books :D

So, because I needed to read up a bit after to put the story into some sort of perspective, I can't give more than a 5/10.

Edit: Slept on it, dropped a point.

Something of a mishmash that never really manages to marry things together, with the writer, the mother, the soldier and the mysticism drifting in and out.
The shootout is clearly the standout scene but felt forced in the way it was planted and not really given a build up from the characters to get to it.
If I'd been told there were multiple directors hired and fired, I'd of comfortably believed it and said well the editors did their best - a bit like Chris O'Dowd's character editing his film in the really good Get Shorty series.
