I'm actually a little worried about Scorsese's upcoming Netflix film. Of the big name director's mentioned in that last paragraph, i actually think the vast majority are arguably the directors' worst efforts.

Annihilation had it's moments but was pretty dull and had a slightly unsavoury 'pc' aroma about it. 22 July was decent and well made, but it reallly wasn't great. Roma had some superb sequences & was perfectly ok, but it was a little dull...although it's arthouse and it's Alfonso Cauron, so I guess I'm a philistine if i dont enjoy watching endless slow panning shots of a cleaner at work. The Apostle was just plain crap...nothing but a collage of half a dozen better made films.

There's also the Coen brothers' latest of course. Again, it had moments, but ultimately it was up/down there with their worst efforts.

Still, Netflix are throwing so much sh*t at the wall, more and more will stick I suppose. I'm sure they've got a few masterpieces around the corner...

Completely agree with the above especially about Roma i am still scratching my head why it's considered a masterpiece.

Not the point. Story should always come first. Undiluted. The film played on the political climate in a rather cynical manner.

Given your presumptuous tone I'm guessing you're one of 'those' types though, so i dont expect you to agree.

Despite this being massively overwrought and hugely clichéd I absolutely loved it. A lot of which I'm assuming is down to Sandra Bullocks performance.

I've yet to watch this but I was thinking of giving it a miss, as it's getting hammered in reviews pretty much everywhere else. Maybe I'll give it a try after all.

Watched it recently. No explanation on why it happen, what was the cause leading to the apocalypse. It was ok. You didn't feel anything towards the characters...did feel some sadness for Tom but that was it...A solid 6/10 but that's it. Not a patch on A Quiet Place.

Nothing can touch Roma for me presently. The most beautifully made film in years.
      Thank you.

66% critics/73% audience on RT - that’s pretty respectable. I notice a few of the critics who disliked it also completely missed the point of the movie.

If Sandra Bullock was not in it I would have thought I would had stumbled across a B-Movie.

Me and wife just watched it and thought it was great. At least a 7/10 film for me. Nothing B-Movie about it. Netflix continues to be a bargain for the content available.

Not into football, darts. I can't stand football but don't mind a bit of boxing. Tennis is my sport of interest.

After 26 years of marriage think I will stick with her now ;)

Heard the book of this was good (which was out a while before A Quiet Place was out) so watched the movie last night, enjoyed it and agree with the reviewer, 8/10.

Fantastic little film, had be gripping the duvet right till the end. Very few films keep you hooked and the adrenaline running throughout but this film manages to do it. It’s one of those films the less said the better, I didn’t really know anything about this other than it’s similar to A Quiet Place, which to be fair they are similar survival films, you can include Don’t Breathe in the same category too.

      4/5

Watched this tonight, absolutely loved it, definitely a 9 out of 10, maybe even a 10. I enjoyed everything about it, the weird monster ( don't look at the outside world / news it will make you want to kill yourself)!. I also thought the dialogue was very entertaining, especially with the John Malkovich character. Top entertainment :smashin:

Watched it last night.Sure,it is a survival horror with not too dissimilar premise to myryad other genre flicks like Quiet Place,Dont Breathe,The Happening,The Mist(still the best,IMO) and others, but it is relatively creepy, tense and dramatic, with the best performance from Sandra Bullock since Gravity. It looks nice in HDR,but the Netflix standard 15 Mbit/s is not very competitive with true 4k Blu-Ray,not even on my lowly 55",and it will probably be released on that format after a while just like other Netflix movies were after a limited cinema run(so much for exclusivity). It is screening in Curzon,if anybody is interested in seeing on a big screen.

After the sci-fi and horror bent of 2018 it looks like Netflix are aiming for more action orientated 2019;Michael Bay and Chandor are releasing guns and robbers porn in the spring.

Yes,most of the Netflix stuff is probably the worst of these directors filmography, but some of it is still worthy and even the medium budget cinema releases from Hollywood are usually aiming for the watered down PG13/12,so i am grateful for the R-Rated streaming.
