Netflix are now apparently putting out 7-8 hours of new content every single day, and they have HUNDREDS of movies in production.

It's a case now where if you don't like one Netflix movie or show, wait 5 minutes as the next one will arrive.

As for Apostle, I was in the moment I saw Gareth Edwards' name. Only question is, do I go with Edwards or Greengrass tonight?

As someone mentioned on the 22 July review thread it’s gotta be down to mood.

Greengrass is meticulous but you have to be in the mood. Apostle is much more viscerally satisfying, if you fancy a creepy, gory horror.

Since 8am this morning. You'll have to search for it though because Netflix don't like to make it easy for you to find their good content, that would ruin their reputation for average.

I searched for The Apostle and Apostle. No sign of it and then I spotted it when I'd typed in Apo. How the hell was I supposed to know the T in the title was formed by an inverted cross ! And how am I supposed to type it ? Stupid Netflix

Lmao, told you they don’t want you to find it!

Although for all my complaints I’ll take them over Amazon 24/7. At least when I stick something on Netflix I know it’s going to AUTOMATICALLY play in the best 4K Dolby Vision way possible without me having to search for some super-hidden menu selection 400 lines down the bottom somewhere.

I've found Dan Stevens infinitely watchable since his rise to fame on Downton Abbey. Looking forward to this.

Nothing in the review indicates why it only gets a 7/10?

Watched this last night on the strength of this review as this isn't normally my thing...but I really enjoyed it in a strange way. Lucy Poynton is one if the upcoming starlets in my opinion after her turn in Sing Street and really looking forward to seeing her in Bohemian Rhapsody.
Only thing for me is it isn't in HDR via the app on my Samsung TV. 4K UHD by sans the HDR

Does this have any scenes of Indonesian men beating the crap out of each other in spectacular fashion?

Watched last night, and actually really enjoyed it. It was a bit of a gruesome watch in a couple of scenes (the drill!), but it's well worth sticking with. Some great performances, and excellent production from Netflix as usual.

Thanks for the review, Cas, nice round up of parallels.
Dan Stevens? Let's hope he doesn't pointlessly flame out like in Downton - or Down Town Abbey as the US citizens like calling it.
      Edit.
Saw it last night and it's not bad, just not great either. It hangs about without getting to tensions quick enough and some how manages to not deploy them with due effect and left me thinking, oh well. That is, apart from the gimp rumble which did get the tension levels up.

Got round to watching this last night and was very very pleased I did. Far more horror than I expected and lots of neat ideas in it.

Quite enjoyed this, although I think I could have watched it on mute for Dan Stevens facial expressions alone!

Thank you for the review and I am pleased others have enjoyed this.

I presume any “twist” at the end was worth waiting for as we found this cheaply made, hammily acted and dull - giving up about 40 mins in (something we rarely do).

Selected “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool” as something completely different and thought it excellent.

World would be a dull place if we all liked the same thing.

Question - if I didn’t like the first half should I go back sometime for the second or just put on Wicker Man (the original of course) instead?

interesting that you mention dolby vision @Casimir Harlow - was just getting standard 4k (no HDR either) on my LG oled... get DV and so on with other netflix stuff but not this...

the film for me was ok - one of my main gripes being...

out of the new 10 or so people joining the island surely Dan's character was the only viable 'spy' once the attempted assassin hit a fail....

I actually felt the same way, thinking after about half hour or so "another standard Netflix film" i.e not very good.

But I really like The Raid movies, so held on because of the director and ended up really liking it.

Was really surprised by this, definitely a cut above the usual bland Netflix movies, and really enjoyed it. Granted recently they have improved, but not many that I would describe as genuinely good. This one is though, with some great performances, and some very effective tense and horrifying moments. Probably only weak element was
the design and make up of the nature goddess/spirit woman, which was where the low budget showed through
, but it didn't spoil the movie for me.

Less Adam Sandler, more of this please Netflix!
