Need Upscaling DVD Recorder

Hi Guys,

I'm looking for an upscaling DVD recorder. I don’t need one with a hard drive as will be for recording from SKY, but it MUST be able to remove adverts when recording to + or – DVD write once disks (ie not re-recordable DVDs)

I have tried two recently, a Toshiba one(can't remember model name) worked fine and allows editing to remove adverts, but did not accept RGB input so playback quality was crap.

Panasonic one (again, can't remember model)was much better with good quality playback and a better looking menu on the DVD. Did not allow editing to remove adverts, this was only possible on DVD-RAM disks.

Can you help?

Thanks,

Pete

The only way to edit out commercials, if you aren't going to use a hard drive, is by recording to DVD-RAM discs (or sit there while the recording is being made and press pause every time the commercials start and record every time the commercials end). No other discs allow you to edit recordings already on the disc.

get one with a hdd inside it m8 , much easier than using disks

I bought sony hxd770 for less than your budget ( if you search the net or e bay ) , and I upgraded my hdd drives in them too , but all you need is a basic 770 or 790

This one does, but doesn't have RGB. Anyone know a similar one that does this but does have RGB?

This one does

Not with write-once discs it doesn't.

No DVD recorder is capable of allowing you to edit the content on a write-once disc. You can use VR mode on DVD-RW discs on that DVD recorder, as you can on pretty much any other DVD recorder, but you said that you wanted to use write-once (i.e. not rewritable discs) and VR mode is not possible on non-rewritable discs on any DVD recorder.

With a write-once disc, once you've put something on it that's it. You can't change it, you can't edit it, you can't remove it. It's there - permanently.

Well, whatever way this Tosh did it, it worked using bog standard DVDrs.

Like posted the 770 is within budget, but has a HDD. What's wrong with HDD? You can still put the finished version on a disc anyway, and the disc version is an exact perfect copy of the HDD version.

the write once dvdr disks probably were written with a TOC that skips out the adverts , effectively hiding them from view

but by far the best methods to do the task is using a hdd or a dvd-ram disk , and hdd is IMHO the best method of editing footage using a dvdr , then fastdub over onto a dvd

personally , I prefer to fastdub from hdd to dvd+RW disk and copy to the pc hdd and do the editing on the pc , as this is by far the best method of them all

the fact you are recording from sky is irrelevant

upscaling dvd recorder is also irrelevant as all flat panel tv,s upscale on their inputs anyway

just buy a dvd recorder with hdd and you are all set to go

I don't like TV upscaling, well not on my TV anyway.. it's really bad.. just stretched with some AA added to get rid of the jaggies. The 770 is slightly better. The PS3 is brilliant.
