    Hi,

I'm planning to buy a plasma or lcd tv. I have a small room and only have a space of width of 95cms available to put the tv. I have a budget of ~2500 pounds.

So I was looking at 32'' and 30'' plasma and lcd tvs. I've checked the Sony and Hitachi plasmas and also the Philips lcds. Picture quality seems alsways to be better on plasma tvs at equivalent price. Am I right?

Sony plasma tvs do not seem very highly rated on this forum. What are my other choices? Are the Samsung new lcds any good?

    Thanks

You'll have trouble with most, cos they come with speakers attached. You will in the end have a choice of only 1 or 2 which fit in this space.

The Sony 32-inch (TS2) has speakers underneath rather than at the side and will fit in your space. I have one (for reasons similar to yours) and am very pleased with it. These models are not popular here because they are poor value, include an analogue tuner so your connection options are limited, and use Fujitsu/Hitachi ALiS screens, on which opinion is sharply divided. Nevertheless my view is they give as good a picture as any other plasma. They are also very handsome pieces of furniture. If I'd had room I would have stuck to CRT, but for me the Sony was the best compromise. I can't offer an opinion on LCD as I've never seen a large-screen version properly set up.

In the circumstances, the sony is a good idea. The Sharp 30" IDTV would fit also, but is much more expensive.

    Thanks for feedback so far.

So am I right to think that in terms of picture quality the podium is:
    LCD -> CRT -> Plasma?

Looks like the sony option is not that great since you would have stuck with a CRT if you could have!

Have there been any press release for 32'' plasma screen lately from pioneer or panasonic? I saw the one from Sony yesterday.

    Thanks

Also new lcds available soon are the JVC 32 and Sony 32. Both look to have speakers underneath. I don't think anyone has commented on picture quality yet.

Pioneer and Panasonic don't make 32-inch plasmas. I wish they did. My advice to anyone whose viewing room is restricted to 32-36-inch screens is to stick with CRT - much better, in my view, than plasma, and much cheaper!

So in terms of picture quality you would not go for a 32'' LCD tv or plasma tv but a CRT?

If I had space, yes. No doubt at all.

Would everybody agree with statement above from BB? - thanks btw!

So basically the plasma 32'' from Sony does not provide a better picture than a 32DX150 from Sony for example?

Sony make great CRT's and mediocre plasmas. If it was Panasonic, it'd be harder.

Whoops, I think Maw's anti-ALiS prejudice is showing...Maw, if you're ever in my neck of the woods (near High Wycombe), I wish you'd come and take a look at my Sony. I think you might be pleasantly surprised.

Seen them all mate, I sell and install them. Won't sell a sony, poor value, expensive accessories, horrid analogue tuner, it's not the alis I don't like here, that's OK with TV, it's Sony trading a dodgy product with their fine name on it. And by the way, have you seen the Hitachi thread? It seems quite a number of their screens have shown a 'fault' which Hitachi do not acknowlege, they say it's within tolerance. Again, it's not alis per se I don't like, I've had previous experience of Hitachi, and may I surprise you by saying that I won't sell them....

Hmm, interesting. What I don't understand, though, is that if you won't sell and install Sony how can you know what it's capable of? I absolutely agree - indeed stated earlier - that it's poor value and I don't use the analogue tuner. But for those of us with space restrictions, it's either a Sony or a Hitachi and for me that's no contest.

I'd go for the new sharp IDTV LCD myself, unseen, over that choice. Underslung detachable speaker, 30", but it's the digital tuner that pushes my buttons. How do I kn ow about Sony? Cos folks who've got them ring me up to say 'I've spent loads of money on this marvellous sony plasma and I can't get a decent picture on it, can you help me?'. Twice a week roughly speaking. Happens more often with |Sony than any other, cos they have such a name for TV.
