IMX Samsung drives are now the quietest, and in a benchmark I saw some time back they were also quicker than Barracudas which used to be thought of as the quietest drive.

    WARNING

It seems Samsing have cut costs and are using a cheaper, louder motor .. at least that's what this thread on HTPCNEWS is saying.

i have recently used Seagate Barracudas. They are not the fastest about but are pretty quiet.

I bought x4 80GB Spinpoints about a month ago and was very disappointed. They are VERY noisy. There is a constant metallic whine from them.

More recently I bought Seagate 80GB and 200GB. They are very, very quiet. Plus you now get 5 years guarantee.

I have 3 Samsungs several months old and they're a lot quieter than the Seagates I have, sadly looks like they're no longer viable .. I don't like Seagates because they regularly go into rhythmic clicking fits which get damned annoying, I thought it was SMART but that's disabled but all my 'Cuddas do that .. *sigh* why did Samsung try to save a few pennies? :(
