My Philips DVDR890 has gone belly up again & I am currently trying to get Philips to sort it out or replace it even though it is out of warranty.

It leaves me with nothing on which to record stuff at the moment so I was thinking of getting a HDD recording device.

In an Ideal world I would get the Panny HS2 or similar but unfortunately I do not have enough pennies.

So - with a budget of 350 quid max what do the panel suggest.

I was thinking of perhaps one of these JVC-XV-DDV1 / Thompson DTH7000U / Samsung DVDH40.

I also looked at the Pace Twin but wasnt sure how that would fit in with my Sky box - I dont want 2x Sky Sat boxes as I already have enough kit under my telly as it is.

Any comments on the above machines or suggestions for alternatives welcome.

The Humax machines I am sure will be good, I know my Humax IRCI5400 has served me well & still does, top machine & great software.

Problem is I need something now - Ideally I want to order today or tomorrow & be playing with the thing by the weekend.

If you just want a dumb PVR with excellent recording quality the Twin is pretty good

I am now considering a HDD/DVD Recorder as I have a little more money available.

Choices at the moment are Panny HS2 - Tosh RDXS30 & Pioneer DVR5100.

Anyone have experience of any of the above & wish to pass on your comments?

Take a look at these threads on the DVD Recorders forum:
"Which one??? Sony GX3/7, Pioneer DVR5100 or Panasonic HS2"
    ...and...
    "Panasonic HS2 or Toshiba RDXS30?"
(I would link to them but that rarely seems to work for me  )

Long and short is they are all excellent machines but, if you want to record from Sky or a Freeview box, then the HS2 pulls far ahead of the crowd due to it's RGB in (the others only have S-Video).

You may also want to consider the E100 if you thinks it's differences from the HS2 are of benefit to you (larger HDD, DVD-Audio support, mp3 playback, MPEG4 recording etc).

I have decided to go with the Tosh in the end based on what I've read on here & Digitalspy & taking into account the prices and delivery schedules etc.

Should arrive tomorrow - I will post my findings in due course, it HAS to be better than the Philips machine though that's for certain.
